Hi again,I'm trying to find a rifle/cartridge combonation for whitetail in the northeast.I live in NJ,which is shotgun only and thats all I've ever hunted with,my wife, daughter and I are thinking about a move to upstate NY,where i could use a rifle. My prime objective is meat,I'm used to shooting under 100 yds, really under 50 yds.with a shotgun. After thinking about a .223 and comming to the conclusion it might not be the best option for me I'm looking for other options. The other rifle/cartridge is the Remington 7600 Carbine(synthetic) 30-06 or stay with the shotgun?I hunt thick woods and if we move,I can't see hunting in any other type of terrain,I'm also a big fan of the Benoits and Hal Blood.Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I have to add, while I'm a big admirer of the Benoits and Mr.Blood,I'm not after big bucks but just after meat.

The other rifle/cartridge is the Remington 7600 Carbine(synthetic) 30-06 or stay with the shotgun

That'll work. The '06 is plenty beefy for the job and the carbine will work well in the woods..

a marlin lever action 30-30 or 35 rem. with a fix 2.5, 4, or 1.5x5 scope would work too.

I like Marlin's; especially .35 Remingtons; but the 760 Remington 30-06 gives you extra range and power. Frequently they have near bolt action accuracy and the triggers are fairly easy for a competent gunsmith to work for a fairly light, crisp pull. Also, a 760 will handle a lot like the shotguns you are used to.

Yeah, forget it unless your eyes dictate the need (like mine). For the shots distance you're talking about, you simply do not need a scope.

IMHO, of course. smile

You can't get a better rifle for the northeast than a 7600 carbine. Short, fast, points like shotgun, and for AIMED shots as quick with a followup as a semiauto. Faster than a lever IME, and accurate enough to reach 250+ yards if you need to. Might not be quite as reliable as a Mauser or M70 under snowy, freezing conditions, but it's good.A number one pick for your style of hunting. Get one!

Marlin is fine for the thick stuff. The 35 will drop deer and bear. A low power scope of any ilk is fine, as would be a good peep site. I'd go with the scope myself, as 150 plus yard shots are rare, but possible.

That 7600 is a great "go to rifle." I just sold my 760 only because I couldn't close my safe, but I still have my 7600 .270 for deer and antelope.

I've got a Rem 760 in 35 Rem with a Weaver V-3 on it and it's a great little rig. This past season I used another V-3 on my bolt action rifle for deer hunting. For the money the V-3s are a pretty good deal. If you can find a Leupold VX-II 1x4 they have a little more eye relief, I have a couple of them on predator calling guns and am pleased with them also.

I also have the 7600 carbine in 35 Remington. Killed a good eight pointer with it in 2005 in Deleware county up state NY.

Great woods gun, light, short, comes to the shoulder fast and the 35 Rem has plenty of power for NY big game. It was one of the special runs for Grices gun shop in PA.

Mine has the see thru scope mount with a 2X7 Nikon pro staff.

How about a 760 in .308 Win or .35 Rem. Might be a bit of a search but definitely better than the 30-06.. recoil wise and handling wise.

Man I have a 7600 carbine that I purchased in .35 Remington and then had Gander mountain rechamber to .358 winchester. I absolutely love the thing....short and fast handling and plenty of punch for any thing that I'm likely to hunt. Got a PA bear with it in 2005 and a couple of deer...not sure that you could find a better all purpose rig for the type of hunting that I do in Pennsylvania (IMHO)....the .35 Remington is a great round though (have taken a boat load of deer with this caliber in the Remington 141).
