I've always wanted a Savage 99 but could never aford one. I got a what I feel was a good deal last night. A Savage 99 F chambered in 308 for $300. The serial # is 9967xx. This will be my primary pig/deer rifle replacing a Rem 700. It's in good condition with only honest wear. The barrel is perfect and it sports both the origional sights and a Lyman peep on the reciever. Was this a fair price for the rifle! I hand load and I'm not fond of recoil, what would be a good load or your pet load for this gun. Is the triggeer adjustable and can the action be a little slicker? It gets a little stiff before it closes.

Your OK, mostly they sell for $350 in the condition you describe. A really nice one will bring $375 to $400....The F model is one of the best rifles Savage made, especially if it is an early one with the lever safty made in the 60's.....but the top lever guns were nice also and actually more user friendly.

From my neck of the woods you got a real good buy on the .308! I'd take all you could send at that price.

The lever bite can be adjusted by removing the lever and tweaking the curve in it. It's a fairly tedious process and is posted on the forum here. Sounds like yours is a little too tight but I'm not sure I'd try to fix that.

My .308 is real finicky on powder and only likes IMR4064. It shoots best with 165 grain Hornadys and 43 grains of powder. Of course, start lower and work it up.

I have four manuels and IMR 4064 seems to be one of the best. The other if I remember the number correctly is Win478. I hope to use 130 gr and 150 gr for most of my hunting needs. I'm not a fan of recoil and I hope to reduce some of it in this light gun. Thanks guys>
