There was a few hundred elk up on that butte the other day. I believe there's a mineral that area is lacking in the feed which leads to brittle antlers. It's probably also due to them always being in the sun, and the WGFD managing that area for bull quantity. It may as well be a bunch of dudes in a bar fighting over one girl. I think it all adds up to busted antlers, as 99% of the bulls out there are that way. It's a unique hunt, regardless. Glad you got to experience it. I'm glad I got to experience it too, just wish I'd get another crack at it, but that's very unlikely.

The elk you're thinking of was taken by my pal Al Klassen in the Yukon. I'll see if I can come up with a picture of that bull. It was the largest elk killed in North America that year(2009).

Nobody is more deserving of a grand bull than this guy..... Al is one of the best friends I have, and one of the best sheep hunters in the entire world....

I've read several articles about him over the years, and seen him in a few advertisements for various products. He seems like the real deal, for sure.

Keep looking at how big a body this bull has. They are some big bastids. That thing was no kidding the size of my 16 hand quarter horse. WAY bigger bodied than any Rocky Mountain bull I have been around. 1200-1300 lbs is what ADFG estimates mature bulls average on Afognak, based on a pre-hunt letter (or should I say, warning) they sent us. While I didn't exactly have a Cat Wheel loader bucket handy, nor a scale I fully believe those two bulls we got were in that poundage range. It took us 4 days of packing meat to get them two miles back to base camp.
