I live in a rural economic backwater, when logging went away (thank you Nafta) and working blue collar families were forced out, some of the slack was taken up by urban folks snapping up cheap real estate for a vacation getaway home. And that's fine, it's a free country, and by and large they are decent folks...just have a different outlook than us bumpkins. Well, it's predictable, they're showing up here from the cities. One family, from SF, about a quarter mile from me, scared to death, hoarding, panic buying, and formerly eager to be friendly now social distancing to an extreme.
It's a strange situation, I have no experience with it and don't know how to act. Maybe that's the best, give them their space and isolation.
The regular long time neighbors have been checking on each other, offering to run errands if we were going into town, just doing regular neighbor stuff.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Well, the first step for leadership is to issue advice and directions for responsible citizens to follow: avoid crowds, don't leave home unless there is no other choice,........When during national emergency which current situation is sensible rules are not followed new steps have to be implemented in publics best interest. Don't worry soon there will be fewer people about town, therefore, there will be less of a hoarding problem.

Which is why the left and Hillary asked why everyone isnt being tested. The test is highly inaccurate and gives a high percent of false positives.

People everywhere would seemingly be afflicted and it would increase the panic.

HB, I'd be asking the store mgr why they werent taking care of ALL their customers by limiting purchases to each shopper.

I saw a meme tin he other day—a shelf full of hand sanitizer bottles—price was $4.09 each and $95.60 for 2.
I thought it a clever way to limit hoarding.

This grab/hoard behavior beats anything I have ever seen.

There are a few sensible explanations.

My daughter works for her Sister in Law at a preschool/daycare. They are having a real hard time keeping the pantry stocked for 150 little tykes. They buy what they can find when they can find it.

We have three kids with their own families. We purchase as we can find things and share between the four families.

The lady in line in front of you could well have been purchasing for a dozen families, or a shelter.

The way the lady was acting I don't think she was buying for multiple families or shelter, etc.

We freeze milk here all the time so that we don't have to go to the big town very often to get a decent price. Just give it a little extra room in the jug for expansion. It keeps for many months in the freezer with no problem. This winter, I had about 10 gallons out in the shed when it was cold during Dec-Jan-Feb. We just finished using it.

Eggs will quite honestly keep just about forever it seems, just in a cool basement that doesn't get above 55 or so. If you really want to keep them, wipe them down with mineral oil and keep coolish. 6 months is nothing, a year will work, and I've eaten some when we were growing up that were over a year old with no problems if you cook them. My Mom used to stock up for nearly the whole year on the week after Halloween, when any "leftover" eggs would be reduced to nearly free from local producers.

Why would eggs be on sale at Halloween?

The 1,800 people that have died (so far) in Italy might disagree with you on that "main effect of Corona" statement.

You can also freeze them in ice trays, once frozen take them out and freeze in bagies.
