What's the serial number? 99C's in 284 were made from 1965 to 1972.

That looks like the very end of 1966, so flip a coin as to whether the date code would be 1966 (T) or 1967 (U).

Appreciate the data. I show a batch of 99F's in 284 with 108xxxx serial numbers which should date to early 1965, but the date codes are scattered across 1966 and 1967. Don't have date codes for 99C's in 284.

Rory, don't know if you have it in your data. I have a 99DL in 284, serial #1091xxx with a T date code. The serial # would indicate 1965 production, the date code 1966 production. I discuss this on p.95 in my book.

I haven't jotted down a lot of data, but it looks like a lot of the 284 rotor based 99's were done in batches and finished much later (higher date codes than serial #'s would indicate), but the 99C's in 284 were finished the year you'd expect. Rotor based 284's were significantly different than non-284 receivers though, so it makes sense they did them in batches.

And add in things like a 1967 99F in 284 with a Chicopee Falls stamped barrel, and the 284's are just plain weird.

Thanks.

I wonder do the 284's share a barrel profile with any of the Chicopee stamped barrels from pre-1960? If they took pre 1960 barrels and lopped two inches off then bored them and stamped caliber later that would explain it. Maybe Savage stamped the barrels with an address immediately after manufacture but many sat for years before production because any unstamped barrel could be stolen and repurposed or otherwise claimed by someone else? An inside employee black market so to speak?

Otherwise, the late 1950's guns had 24" barrels and the post 1964 284's are 22", so they would have had to build the barrels in 284 post 1964 then use the old Chicopee stamp on them, which is weird.
