I just picked up this 99eg in a 300 #507xxx. the stock is cracked and I was wondering about the best way to repair it. The crack goes all the way down from the tang to the lever and if I twist the the stock I can open it a little. I don't want to shoot it till it is fixed. Should I just look for a diferent stock? Any suggestions?

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I have fixed one and it turned out just fine. I cut a wedge to push in between the sides of the stock to open the crack a little, mixed acrglass and lightly colored it, used a syringe to put the glass in then blew it into the crack with light pressure from the air hose.wrapped it in rubberbands, and wiped off the extra glass.

If it's a bad crack, and your not confident that you can do it, you may wish to seek professional help. Especially if you want to shoot the gun on a regular basis. This guy was referred to me by a friend who says his work is top notch. I spoke to the guy a couple of times and he says he'll fix a Savage tang crack permanent, no problem. My friend did say the guy has a lot of work so expect the stock to be gone for at least 3 months. www.stockfixrs.com

I'm sure the gumbands will work, but when I repaired furniture, I used clamps, the tighter you clamp it, the less chance you'll see a glue line. One thing you might want to try is waxing the stock around the crack before you glue it, that way, any squeeze out won't affect the finish, if you're worried about that. If you're going to refinish it, it won't matter much. good luck

A couple of tips: douche out the crack as best you can with acetone, use slow set epoxy, suck epoxy through the crack with a vaccum cleaner, and unset epoxy can be cleaned up with a rag wet with vinegar.

My gunsmith uses a product out of California which is like a commercial version of "Crazy Glue". The name, it's "ZAP CA" or use "ZAP a GAP" when it needs to fill a hairline crack. First, he wraps the crack with tubing or giant rubber bands to close the crack tight. He loves this product because it runs through the wood pores and seeps deep into the area. Then he takes a dremel tool and cut thin slivers cross and through the crack. Taking thin precut wood shims "cross bracing wedges", he gently hammers those back into the cuts he made and again applies the "ZAP". It absorbs into both shims and the butt stock. A little wood chisel cleans the excess and "voila"! This was how he also repaired a break at the wrist, essentially a tang crack gone to the extreme! The "shims": the finished break:

I sure appreciate all the help. It will be the first of next week before I give it a try. I especially like the patch put on the inside. I will take before and after pictures and unless I make it worse.... I will post them. I do plan on it being just a shooter so I want it strong. By the way...is there a cheep place on line to get 300's. Or just the local shops.

I think you are refering to ammo? The cheapest I'm finding on line (and in stock) is at Mid-South http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com. It has all taken a good jump. What I am seeing is in the $21-23/box. May be someone else will find a better price.

Got a local store that sells 180gr 300 Savage Winchester for $15/box, so I'd think somebody would sell for about that. I reload, still cheaper.

You better clean him out while you can. He won't be selling for that once he has to reorder! Ammo took a big jump first of the year.

The local gun store had Rem. 150's for $19.99. I would guess that is a pretty good price right now.

Well I must be buying at the wrong store! I just spent 26.25 for a box of Winchesters in the 150 grain. I've been told it's gonna get worse.

Steve, I'm in the peoples republic of Taxachusetts. I think I need to have live ammo sent to an FFL dealer just like a gun? Then the fee I pay the dealer, I'm in the same boat?

Picked up 3 boxes of Winchester 180gr's on the way home. Ignoring Rick is usually likely to make me sad later. $46.50 with tax...

I think you need to go on a road trip. Taxachusetts don't need to know where you buy your ammo.
