Gents: What McMillan stock would you choose for a 24" Sporter contour .30-06 Winchester 70 and why?

A short time back I received my Hunter's Edge Christmas special...olive green on a stainless steel Win 70 in .308 with a featherweight contour at 22 inches with Leupold 2.5-8. I like it! And now Rick is doing it again!

Now...for the '06. Or should I just rebarrel to a featherweight 6.5x55 and get another Edge?

J-what and where are you gonna be hunting with the rig?

The 308 you have sounds like a beaut!

I'd go Edge for sure and would go 06 over the Swede.

Thx

Mark D

also what part of Minne are you at?

Northern Red River Valley along the ND border. Use is only for hunting whitetails.

A Featherweight barrel in .30-06 plus another Hunter's Edge, sounds good. I haven't had a chance to take the .308 into the field, but I sure like the way it all came together.

It'll be a great outfit, the 25/06 is another round I'd encourage you to consider as well.

Just a thought.

I have been to DL many times in my youth...the girls on the beach you know?

I didn't really want to rebarrel at this time, so maybe I will take advantage of Rick's Special by ordering for another rifle until I can make up my mind. Thanks for the input.

FWIW:

With the 308, ya'll really don't need another lightweight all arounder (though, need is rarely a reality around here).

Seems to me both the 6.5x55 and teh 30-06 are just overlap.

Is there another "need"? Maybe 22-250 or 223 on the low end or (seing as this is a long action) maybe the Whelen or the 9.3x62?

Or are you kwping this barrled action as is?

Maybe then I would go standard technology and set up something on the '06 that is a speciallized long ranger.

I'd do an EDGE in the Winchester Hunter's EDGE pattern for that rig.

Mark: About fifty miles north of Fargo/Mhd.

BMT: I'm well covered with 13 pound plus long range rigs in .308, .223 and a 7mm Mag that wants to become a .300 Win Mag. 9.3x62 holds a lot of interest for me.

Rick: I was thinking of that, but I am concerned the heavier contour might skew the balance/handling results. I suppose I could always lop off two inches of barrel. This Edge business has spoiled me, you know.

The kids will likely use my .308 Win with some 125 or 130 grainers. Thanks to all for the advice.

Thx J- the kids would do very well with the 308 heck all of us would. Run a 130 TSX up it and rock on!

Do you like a gun to be a bit weight forward? I do and would big time dig an Edge with a 4 weight Schneider in it.

What's the scoop on the Mickey sale? I'm in the dark here...

How much is a Hunter's Edge for a Model 70?

That's on my wish list...

Read all about it at the top of the "Hunter's Campfire Forum." Christmas sale in June...save a few bucks. Now is the time to order and begin the loooong wait. Worth it though.

The one I have on order for my model 70 is a Sako hunter in the edge technology.

Sweet.

Dober,
You fly fish for muskies? Dang, that's a new one on me! I went to school (for a long time) at SU back in the 70's, and we used to go to Lake of the Woods for muskies, but we used big black jerkbaits (any color is fine as long as it's black) or big bucktails. grin

We used to party some at DL as well! grin

I agree with Ric, I bought one through him for my M70 270WSM 6 weeks ago and I liked it so much I ordered another one for my custom .257 weatherby on a M700 action. I will post pics of the 270 WSM in a week or so, just getting some work done to it. When the Edge is ready for the .257 I will post pics of it also.

I should have mentioned that mine was a featherweight but I think they have the same barrel conture as the sporter but have a different stock from factory, by the wat I reload and that 270WSM shoots .6'' groups consistantly and with the edge it lost 10oz. which makes it a fine mountain rifle with great balance at 7.4oz with a 3x9 VXII with talley lightweights and a sling.
