pre-65 cut checkering? I believe the 99C started 1965, same year as the stamped checkering, but as with all things Savage anything seems possible. Just curious as I have a few rifles from the 1964 transition period with different checkering styles and keep my eye out for them. Have never seen a cut checkered 99C (until the later machine cut version).

Nope, not a one. First year catalog for the 99C shows double diamond checkering, and I've only been able to locate TWO rifles online that have that. One I'm not sure of, might be a replaced stock.
So double diamond checkering is the rarity here, no evidence of cut checkering on 99C's in the 60's.
Unless somebody has something?

Don't recall seeing a 99C in double diamond either, thanks for that info. I still don't want a 99C tho! A 99C with the early cut checkering would have to have been a holdover/throwback/weirdo/one-off, like some of the Westfield guns with Chicopee barrels.

I raised the question of whether there might be cut checkered 99C's in 284 out there with Rick. But when I started researching postmils for the book, the earliest 99C I could locate is very late 1964, and the cut checkering seems to have stopped in mid-1964. So it's not impossible for a cut checkered one to show up, but be skeptical... It'd almost have to be an early prototype.
