Shot my first FAL today. I’m hooked. It was a DSA FAl but still buetiful and easy shooting. Any FAL tips for a new buyer?

Try to avoid any built by the angry beavers at Century Arms.
Imbel receivers are good Hesse are very, very bad.

I can’t see the attraction, I got paid to lug one around and the day they swapped it out for a M16 I thought I had won the lottery

Not really any tips. If there is something wrong other than a bad receiver, they are pretty easy to fix.

You are probably one of very few on the 'fire who toted one in uniform, care to share the story? Regards, Bob.

No offense taken, my reply was a bit rude.
No interesting tales to tell, there was nothing going on when I was in. Shot one a lot both in training and competition I didn’t like the ergos of the SLR and far preferred the M16 to shoot, and of course it was a lot lighter to carry One tip, they are more pleasant to shoot when the gas is set properly which is really easy to do

They are the only pretty assault rifle I'd like to have an original Belgian with 20" barrel and the long flash hider, but I'm not going to pay $3k+ for one of them.

Ok. I'll chime in. I've had a few pre ban original, to include 2 of only 158 "Poyer" L1a1's, An unfired 50.63, and a "Rogak" Browning 50.00. I did like the look of Steyr import long flash hider 50.00. There are a few Sear cut Fal's floating around, but DON'T swap out the semi ejector block, for a fa one. Kit built's can be hit or miss. They all can be made to run 100%. Garage built can be just as good as a smith built. I don't like STG buttstocks. They transfer recoil to the cheek bone. Para's rock. Finest of them all.

I just sold mine a few weeks ago. It was built on an Imbel receiver, using STG58 parts. The barrel had been cut down to 16.5 inches, and even though I've always found FAL's to be to heavy for my liking, this one was not too bad. My reason for selling it was that I wanted a semi-auto 7.62X51 rifle that I could shoot accurately out to say, 500 yards, at least accurate enough that in a SHTF situation, I could hit a car sized target. I couldn't hit worth a dime with the FAL, even at close ranges. Just couldn't see the sights well enough, and the rifle itself didn't appear to be that accurate.
So, I sold it to a friend and bought a Armalite AR-10. Scoped it, and it's accurate enough to do what I want. Have to admit that I've had misgivings about letting the FAL go, but as far as being better armed, I believe I am.
