I noticed this pre war R with what looks like d&t in the barrel like the Spiegel rifles ( plus a lot of extra holes).

Did Spiegel offer other rifles besides EGs?

I've got nothing constructive to add other than noting that one full of holes.

There's a spot under the barrel without a hole.

I always get a chuckle when guys put up pictures to sell a gun and you have to file through a pile of images before you actually get to see the gun.

Makes me grit my teeth when I scroll to the description and it's a thousand words about why they don't want to sell the gun . Don't bid if.... Don't bid if...
Sheesh just describe the dang gun already!
Rant off!.

Holes are one thing , that looks like someone used wood screws in the holes! Still it sold. Like a old friend said , an ass for every seat!

Were there any Spiegel Specials without the roll engraving on the receiver? The few I have seen all were "engraved"'

1) Yes, we've seen a couple prewar 99R's with Spiegel holes. I've got one also in 250-3000.

2) Yes, the earliest Spiegel EG's didn't have the roll stamp on the sides. That came later. At the serial number range this rifle is at, a Spiegel EG wouldn't have a roll stamp.

3) Nobody has ever seen a Spiegel ad with 99R's advertised. 99H's.. but no 99R.

Mine is also drilled for both the top mounting block holes, and a Weaver T-7 just like this one. In fact the Weaver T-7 holes look like the same exact placement as this one.

Lots of holes, but prewar 99R's in 250-3000 are damned rare.

Quite likely these were a similar thing to the Spiegel rifles, just sold through another retail chain. If it wasn't $65 to letter a rifle, I'd send for a letter for mine and try to figure it out. Should have done it when Callahan had the ledgers.

PS: Gene, that cheap Weaver 29S I picked up in Tulsa where you cleaned up will be going on this prewar 99R of mine. Easy way to make the holes look better is to fill them or hide them. grin

Thanks Calhoun, I thought I remembered someone saying there were Spiegels besides EGs. At least whoever bought it will have plenty of scope mounting options laugh

This catalog has two models listed, the pictures are not 100% accurate, the front scope block is shown in the wrong place on the EG and the H is totally wrong. This is the first catalog I have seen showing scopes and the only one with Marlin, later catalogs have Mossberg scopes but there are a few catalog issues missing from my list.

I sure would like to see that 99"H" in person. It not only has a crescent buttplate, but it's a takedown with a scnable forend.

The spectrum of what we call "Spiegel's" makes my head hurt. eek
99EG/R/H, D&T'd, roll stamped or not, partial checked or not, sling studs or not, brass medallion or not, catalog artwork representative or not,...

I wonder if Spiegel's had their own shop. ??
They'd order a standard rifle and Spiegelize it. ??

I personally don't believe these 99R's are Spiegel rifles, I'd say another retailer. The funky target block holes are the only common denominator.

They are both low enough serial numbers to be lettered. Maybe I'll do that some day.

Really, I was hoping we had found a new variation. Were some "F"s produced with crescent BP's? I think the arteest who drew that one was imbibing in controlled substances.

I think it's just a screwup by the art department who made up the catalog. Cut and pasted in the wrong model. Early in my career I was coordinator with an art department, and artsy guys and gals are interesting folks, but definitely NOT technical.

The 99A and 99H were the only two models cheaper than the 99EG, and the choice of cartridges being 250-3000, 303 and 30-30 seems to mean the true 99H since those were the available cartridges in 99H in 1935/1936.

I had a note about the pictures being wrong, I went back & changed it a little & highlighted it, I think these catalogs have to be prepared several months ahead so they may not have all the correct information & there is no way to make edits later. They did have the picture right for the H the year before as shown in small the attachment. Even Savage's own catalog often to not have fully accurate pictures.
