I just acquired a Savage 99E that has 10R in the oval on the lever boss making it a 1964 production gun. It has a 20" barrel and I'm wondering if that is factory original. This measuring from end of barrel to front of breech block.
This rifle has had recoil pad installed and is in decent shape
(90%+) with no impressed checkering on the stock.
The serial number is 107xxxx.
I am wondering how much this rifle is approximately worth as I got it off gunbroker for $365 total from my dealer.
Just wondering if thats a fair price or did i get hosed.
I know these are not as collectable as the pre-mil guns and and it is the economy version with hardwood stock
Also, where can I get a good replacement stock for it if I decide to go that route and put some walnut on it?

thanks in advace for any info.

You did not hit the lottery,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but you did not get hosed either. If you want a hunting/shooting gun in a 99, you are now the proud owner of same. Enjoy it. smile

You don't mention the caliber, but that's a good price for a 99. They aren't collectible if a common caliber, but they can still be a great hunting rifle. Hey, any great hunting rifle for under $400 is a bargain!

Cabela's sells a EG style stock, saw a reworked 99E recently with a EG style schnable stock and it looked a whole lot better than any 99E did out of the factory.

Or Gun Stocks Inc in Iowa sells 99 stocks, and a couple other places.

It is a 308. I just bought it for a hunting gun so I guess I did ok in that respect. I like the thinness of it and light weight.
I was thinking about getting one of the new Marlin ME's but this will be better ballistically and I have a stack of 308 ammo already. I'll have to check into those stocks or just may leave it as is, It was 320 for the gun plus 25 shipping and 20 FFL fee.
I bought a 243 99E back in the mid 80's from Howard Brothers
stores before they closed for the princely sum of $177. The gun shot so high with the iron sights that I traded it off back then.
It was shooting about a foot high at 25 yards with it adjusted all the way down.
You would think these rifles would have been more popular down south here but I have rarely encountered one out in the field around here and the only one I remember was back in the 70's a hunter had one in 22 savage hipower and downed a nice 8 ppint buck with one shot.

There are a couple of guys that really like the 22 H.P. around here.
I saw a couple for sale about a month ago.
Nice looking rifle. But i would think it was not big enough for deer.

Anything 22 caliber automatically makes me cringe when thinking about deer hunting, but the 22-250 and 223 have definitely dropped a lot of critters. The cringing is just my gut reaction, it has little to do with reality.. The 22 bullet is only 10% thinner than the 243, so it's obvious that it's enough to kill a deer sized animal. You just have less leeway with a bad shot.. and you typically have to work with smaller bullets so that doesn't help any.

In short, not something I'd recommend for deer but I wouldn't condemn somebody for using it either.

This was back in 1975 when I saw this particular hunter and he was using Dominion ammunition with a 70gr bullet I beleive.
The 22 Savage is close to a .23 caliberwith the .228 diameter bullets. It was a straight on chest shot and he said the deer dropped on the spot. My buddy in east Texas shoots deer, hogs, etc with a .223 rifle that I sold him. At last count he said he had shot over 30 hogs with it and about 18 deer. He said the wincester 64gr powerpoints would be found on under the hide on the hogs on the offside. He shot mostly eating size hogs around 100-200lbs. He has shot them with all kinds of different calibers from 22 mag on up and he said the .223 is one of his favorites. Most of the deer are around 100-150lbs and it drops them also or only run maybe 30 yards tops.
I'd rather use more caliber also but I took one hog with a 45LC Ruger shooting a 260gr bullet around 1400fps. At 35 yards, it just dropped and the bullet shot all the way through with no recovery on a broadside shot.
My friends son killed one with a 17HMR to the side of the head. I didnt think it would penetrate but dang if it didnt drop him after a little bit and the offside eye was bulged a bit.My buddy swears by a 22mag to the earhole but to each his own.
