A few months ago I mentioned here that I had bought a brand new condition 99T .300 with hang tags from Doug Murray that he had owned for over twenty years. Early this week this rifle was essentially ruined when rain came down through the ceiling of my living room in NYC - I am on the 16th floor under a penthouse and water came in through the juncture of the penthouse wall and terrace. Lots of rust as I was out of town for two days and the rifle sat there in the wet. Several other guns, including a gorgeous custom 7-30 99 by Harold Randall, were very badly damaged but are more or less salvageable. Of course the financial loss is no joke but the heartburn is worse.

Sounds like you need a good wood man. Is the metal OK?

I can't even IMAGINE something like that. When I met you at the fest and saw the type of rifle you collected, I knew you were a man full of pride. I can't even conceive what you must be feeling. The monetary side of it will be replaced because money is renewable. Owning a "T" in the condition of the one that is ruined, is priceless. For a lawyer guy, you ain't a bad fellow.

Mark,
that was a hard one to hear. I remember being stunned by the trunkful of guns that pulled up in that little red sports. And a mint "T", too. Ahhhh!!!
Me? I would immerse myself in restoration projects as time and finances allow... rust disappears with little work, water damage to wood that's another issue.
Keep us in the loop and let us know how you choose to resolve the problem.

sorry to hear of your misfortune. I do not wish to pour salt in in yourwound, but as a newbie only wish to learn. Did you use old west snake oil? Is this oil capable of saving our prize weapons in a situation such as this?Again, i'm sorry to hear that news.

Hemlock, I think I read a letter from a user of Snake Oil that it did save his rifles in a situation like this, but I'd take that with a BIG grain of salt. As bad as it sounds like vig got hit I don't think anything would have helped short of a safe.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I sprayed everything with WD40 and have now rubbed all the metal down with bronze wool. Damage is bad but not as bad as I first feared. All the blue came off one side of the 99T receiver but no pitting, much rust spotting on the barrel. Wood is OK, just needs a rubdown. Am inclined to get the rifle restored, but don't know who can do a circa 1935 Savage blue job. The custom 7-30 will go back to Steve Nelson who checkered it and who has offered to fix it. Might see if a quarter rib can go on it while he is at it. One gun came out improved, a pump action Krag conversion made by a mad gunsmith probably in the 1920s, had no finish left so now after I have wooled off all the rust it is a nice even brown.

Vigillinus,
So sorry to hear of your misfortune. I also have a 99 that was purchased from Murray. By any chance were you the fellow that brought 20-25 guns into Mitch Schultz's shop a few weeks back? All his guns had suffered water damage of varying degrees.

No, didn't leave any restoration work with Schultz, but I was in the shop a couple weeks ago, gave him a 6.5x55 1903 Springfield to work on.

A pump action Krag conversion ????????????
Mike My sentiments exactly! "A pump action Krag conversion????????"! Wow - I would like to see pictures of that. And, like the rest of the group Mark, you have my condolences on the damage to your rifles. Can't have been too many new condition (with hang tags) T's around.

Vigillinus,
I'm very sorry to hear of your misfortune. From reading your posts over the years, you are probably the greatest firearms lover on the Campfire. I sincerely hope you can get your fine rifles restored.
Thanks...Bill.
