This afternoon. He had a small fish, maybe 7-8" or so hooked and a pelican that had been hanging around grabbed the fish about 15 yards out from the rocks where the guy was standing.

Guy tried to pull his line or the fish free and the bird would start thrashing. The guy had his buddy throwing rocks at the bird, but eventually he cut his line.

Have heard of this a few times in recent years but this was the first time I saw it.

I have seen seagulls eat bunker chunks and hook themselves while fishing for bluefish and striped bass.

Had a catfish try that. Was playing a crappie when I noticed a catfish about 3' long chasing it. Reeled in fast and lifted it out of the water just as it got to it. Could have swallowed that 9" crappie whole.

Don't put a M80 in a mullet and throw it to a pelican. Seen the results of that 30 years ago, it wasn't good for the pelican or fisherman.

Gannet, anyone? This model was hooked after jumping on a bass plug off Monomoy island off Cape Cod. Pretty sporty fighter.

In a point/counterpoint situation: I caught a shortfin mako off Jupiter, FL years ago just shy of 11' from snout to fork and estimated to weigh ~740 lbs. As the beast was being winched out of the boat onto the dock it puked up a whole brown pelican. Those who know can attest to the fact that they're not exactly small birds...

Do you have a pic of that Mako available to post?

My wife caught a gull once. It hit her bait before it sunk & got hooked. Wife started reeling & the boat was moving as well, looked like she was flying a fancy kite,

I snagged a beaver the size of a Labrador with a big Daredevil spoon. After about 20 minutes I tuckered him out and landed him too. Pulled the hook out, took a pic next to his exhausted azz and turned him loose.

Was salmon fishing on a guide boat with friend two years ago, in BC. We were trolling for kings about 100 yards from shore.
Shore being a rocky 20 tall cliff.
My buddy hooked and was fighting a king salmon, probably 20-30 pounds.
Shortly into the fight a huge sea line dove off he shore rocks and swam like a bullet through the water. The sea lion had the salmon in 10 seconds. My friends line went slack and that was it.
We watched the same happen to another fisherman.
So we moved about a mile down shore to avoid loosing more fish.

Caught a damn bat once while fly fishing the San Juan Quality Water below Navajo Damn in northern NM. Damn thing snatched my fly out of the air during my back cast. 🤠

about 60 years ago I hooked a mink with a 16" brown trout in a side creek of the Truckee river just above Truckee.
mink ate fish I didn't . nasty tempered little buggers.

Hooked a bat fly fishing as a kid. That was quite interesting to land. Landed a few ducks the same way.

My favorite was getting spooled by a sea lion that wanted the lingcod I was fighting. Right under the boat like a sheet of plywood screaming past us. In about three seconds and a couple hundred yards of mono disappeared of the Abu 6501...
