Schools around here shut down on March 17th, It looks like they could be reopened between May 1st and May 15th. The thing is the teachers still got paid, and the kids lost 1-1/2 to 2 months of class time. That money came from my property taxes. I didn't see them reduce those during this time. So I paid for services not rendered.

I want my moneys worth. Keep that school open and make up those classes, if they loose the summer vacation so be it.

My youngest is studying here at home with online instruction, exams and his design project. He will graduate in two weeks so nothing lost here.

As my wife (Kindergarten teacher) sits here in the kitchen doing video conferencing and math lessons with her kids. Not all schools are completely shut down...teachers are still preparing work, making plans, etc even though you can't see it. I can't speak for your district but ours is way ahead of the curve in that each kid has an iPad that they can perform work on...those with no internet are given physical paper work to do.

The administrators were explaining to teachers a couple weeks ago that the actual instruction time for kids is supposed to be pretty low. I can't recall but less than a couple hours per day and age dependent. Parents were getting pissed that they actually had to parent and couldn't have their kids on the computer all day doing school work. It's sad how many view public schools as free day care and don't know what to do when they have to raise their own kids themselves.

My SIL is a 6th grade teacher and they are now doing all online instruction since in-class instruction was cancelled. She is a very dedicated, creative, and hard working teacher that gets nothing but respect from the community she teaches in. Right now, she is spending more hours per day doing the online instruction than when she was in the classroom. Rest assured, her students and school are getting their moneys worth out of her.

You know what this could mean? NO NEED for school buildings any longer, other than a small area for lab work.. I.e., get rid of the buildings and save a TON of taxpayer bux...

But you know THAT will never happen.. Oh no, not that - it's where all the indoctrination is spouted with no parent(s) around to say, "ah, that's not right - here's the truth"..

A Dem nirvana...

Look at the bright side
You have been given a chance to undo some of the teacher liberal programming that has become so prevalent in early education...

I don't have any. If I did I'd probably be a grandfather by now.

I’m wondering if there will be a significant percentage of folks deciding to homeschool after schools are reopened?

We homeschooled our oldest for 3 years & enjoyed it, even though she wasn’t academically inclined at the time.

But I’ll always feel I missed a great opportunity w our boys, we considered me & the boys living at the cabin, me homeschooling them, plus cutting wood, running steel & some carpentry projects (we’d all be learning that as we go ) momma running our biz & spending weekends w us, us boys spending a week at a time in town w her every so often

Alas we opened up another biz that’s done well for us financially, but our boys are men now & an opportunity was missed.

Have always loved my kids being home for summer. I guess we’re weird, always preferred company of our kids. Still do & they spend way more time w us as adults than most kids their age

We’ve been blessed, but still that missed opportunity haunts me a bit. It would have been a blast !

Will be curious to see if re-enrollment numbers are impacted by folks finding out how good it is to have the crumb snatchers w you

I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

Same here. Mrs. FC is spending WAY more time teaching than normal, and doesn't get to "go home" at 3:00 pm. Her phone rings regularly past 10:00 pm, and she'll seldom say, "no" to a kid who's putting in effort.

One major problem is that when a teacher answers a kid's question with a detailed explanation, it will normally take care of that question for the other (up to 29) kids in that classroom at the same time. When they're at home, each kid will contact the teacher separately, with more or less that same question. Now, start again with ALL of the questions that the OTHER kids have. E-learning can be inefficient as fkuc.

No doubt there are some schidtbird teachers who are completely coasting at this time, but they're likely the ones who already spent most of their class time surfing the web or shopping online while their students did meaningless worksheets. The teachers who give a [excrement] are giving at least as much effort as they always have, and very likely even much more.

Just my observation.

Maybe they are shut down in Ohio, but not here. Sure, there's no one at the buildings, but my kids are already sign on online. They have meeting in Microsoft team, conduct breakout session for work in small groups, and teachers are recording lessons at night for the next day.

I'm having the HS Junior watch plenty of Prager U videos.

My son and daughter-in-law are doing the same thing. They prepare and send out lessons and monitor each student's participation. If students are not checking in, they make contact with their parents, by email and then phone if they do not reach them. They are also available at all hours for students or parents to contact them with questions about or help with the work assigned.

I teach HS here in TX. The school building has been closed since Spring Break but that doesn't mean school itself has been closed. We have moved all our classes online and are giving assignments, issuing grades and giving exams. And yes, we are still being paid. My bet is that wherever the OP lives is pretty much doing the same thing. Seems as though he has an issue with teachers like me still being paid. We are still working so we get paid. The OP still has his property so he still has to pay his taxes. That's the system.

I appreciate your statements and perspectives gentlemen. I would hope some parents would look over the kids shoulder and do a B.S. check.
