I believe they work off cell tower triangulation. No cell service no compass. Bad cell coverage - bad compass. My I phone compass does NOT work off cell towers. I switch to Airplane mode —. NO service at all >> Compass works.

They're to assist your brain with re-calibration when you find yourself in an unfamiliar urban environment.
They're not intended to navigate your way through the Brooks Range or Pacific fugking Ocean.
As stated ,iPhone versions are magnetized and should be used accordingly.

The only thing I do not trust is the elevation it can change by up to 20 feet sitting on my desk. Yes. GPS has about 10 times more elevation error than horizontal error. Horizontal position is best determined with a widely space array of satellites. A satellite or two directly overhead can tighten elevation. Still, I'd never try to lay out a ditch with the typical hobbyist GPS unit.
