I bought a bunch of 40 caliber cast bullets here (years back) for experimentation with my muzzleloader.
The heaviest ones (200-225 ish grains?) are keepers, but I have a bunch of 40 cal lighter 160-180 grains soft cast bullets that are useless to me.
I could list them for sale, melt them down, or ...
can i resize a 40 cal down enough to acceptably reload in a 9mm/380?

Not a good idea at all, IMO. I'd sell em off. I wouldn't be inclined to melt them down because my several hundred pounds of bullet metal are all homogenized to the same alloy, and I wouldn't want to screw with it unless there's enough there to cast a good sized lot of something.

If you have a lathe, you could make a sizer that is stepped take,but you might need 4-5 steps in it. Next you would take out most of the lube grooves. I tried taking .403 down to .381 and couldn't get there without a lot of work I sold about 450 of them on here pretty cheap.
Some one with 38-40 might want them

I think they'll end up as fodder for some heavy cast.

Sizing bullets down that much won't leave them very concentric, and it will require several stages to do so. If I were you, I'd smelt them or sell them. I've sized bullets freshly cast down as much as .007": a 45 caliber rifle mould casting .460" down to 45 caliber pistol at .453". It worked fine using a fairly soft alloy of about 1% antimony and 4-5% tin.
I belong on eroding granite, among the pines.
