The Core-Lokts that killed elk for me thought that they were pretty good and fairly well convinced me that they were.

But that was decades before current wisdom applied new criteria. Back then, a dead elk on the ground was a dead elk on the ground, and arm-chair arguments didn't do much to confute real-world field results.

That 1911 on your hip cant hit a 50 gallon drum past 15 yards. The ones we had in the military were terrible..........

In all seriousness, maybe the thing that jerks my chain the most is fellas that think they need an autoloading rifle...to hunt big game.

A .44 Magnum slug can stop a car by punching clear through the engine block.

A .308 produces vicious recoil.

.38 snubs are wildly inaccurate.

A .50 BMG bolt action rifle can knock a commercial jetliner out of the sky. Note: theoretically possible, but so are a bunch of other things that will probably never happen either.

Silenced relolvers that sound like: "phffftt".

This one is more related to the scope crosshairs thing. In movies, they always show binocular views with two merged fields of view, instead of a single one. I hate that!

Both of my hunters were Army Reserve officers. When we got back to the rig, one noticed that I was packing a then-new (1956) .44 Blackhawk and asked about it. I let him shoot it, and in return, he insisted that I shoot his issue 1911A1.

Both men had been complaining bitterly about recently having had to turn-in their older 1911s which they'd had accurized for the clunkers that they got in reissue. Indeed, the trigger pull on that young officer's issue 1911A1 was atrocious.

Across the road, a dead limb an inch or less in diameter stuck up more or less vertically a couple of feet above the snow. I had to bear-down pretty hard with that nasty trigger pull, but I managed to clip the tip of that dead limb off. I handed the gun to the officer.

"Oh, no!" he said. "Shoot the rest of the clip."

So I trimmed that limb, one shot at a time, down to the snow.

(Sure wish that I could shoot like that now!)

My favorites, already mentioned, are;

The bullets from the M16 tumble in flight or upon srtiking flesh and bone acting like a buzz saw.

You need a slow moving, large caliber, round nose bullet to penetrate through the brush.

That cartridge shoots so flat that the bullet is still rising at 200 yards.

In The Man from Laramie, bad guy Alex Nicol shoots good guy Jimmy Stewart in the gun hand without harm to the guy who's standing a couple of feet beyond that hand.

Great testimony to gun safety!

And the shot apparently hits no bone and doesn't take any flesh away with it but just goes through like a high-speed needle.

Another version of the brush busting, bullet tumbling myth.... I heard it at a deer camp about the 30-30. "The 30-30 is a brush busting bullet because it starts tumbling right out of the barrel."
Never did understand the logic behind that one but I know the guy well enough not to try and argue. He's the kind of guy who just defends his position harder and louder when presented with logic.

They may be the biggest bang for your buck on the market........for hunting, I would be tempted to choose a Core-Lokt over a Ballistic Tip.....

You just reminded me of another one Ken. On one of our local radio talk shows a Lady calls up all the time and can't understand why the police can't just shoot the gun out of the hand just like they do in the movies. Or shoot someone in the arm or leg. No amount of discussion with the host can convince her that in real life that doesn't usually happen. It happens only in the movies.

I saw Kevin Costner shoot 23 shots out of a 6 shooter without reloading.

A guy I was hunting with once said that with his 7 mag if he could see it he could kill it because it only dropped 15 inches in 1000 yarda.
