Think the title says it all, we’ve been sold this bill of goods that if we lockdown as a country we won’t stop people from catching the virus. This was strictly a measure to make sure hospitals didn’t become overrun. Well all the “experts” on hospital capacity, expected death totals, etc were all way wrong in their projections. So we flattened the curve, can’t stay locked up forever it’s time to get on with life.
This pandemic, and a weak one at that, will go down as a major historic mistake for the USA as we have now displaced about 26m Americans from their jobs, many of which won’t come back. Future generations will have to pay back our ballooning debt. It deeply saddens me, and I truly hope we can pivot quickly in States and salvage some of the self inflicted damage already done.
And BTW, shame on the fear mongers who now are pointing toward this fall as being an epic Covid virus season. Zero reason to believe they media driven hype, they haven’t been right so far.
Sorry, rant over.

Year Description Peak Jobless claims (4-wk total) % of U.S. Population
1975 Stagflation 2.24 million 1.0% 1980 Fed tightening (Volcker) 2.52 million 1.1% 1982 Double-dip recession 2.70 million 1.2% 1991 Early 1990s recession 2.00 million 0.8% 2001 Dotcom Bust 1.96 million 0.7% 2009 Great Recession 2.64 million 0.9% 2020 The Great Lockdown 22.03 million 6.7%
I'd really like someone to explain to me how .1% or 40k deaths is such a "shock to the country" that we need to do a 8-10 week shut down but 22 MILLION people going unemployed in 4 weeks is a minor blip and the economy will bounce back very fast as soon as we're open. Tis but a scratch....

Here's another statistic: 1347-1351 "The Black Death, also known as the Pestilence and the Plague, was the most fatal pandemic recorded in human history, resulting in the deaths of up to 75–200 million people in Eurasia and North Africa." see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_DeathWhile they didn't understand viruses and protective measures (social distancing, sanitation, nor did they have a CDC), I'll bet they suspected something was happening! Viruses are like a pet cobra - maybe lovable some times, but can get out of control.

Your 26 mil. is short.
Those numbers are for people who are eligible for unemployment benefits. There are millions in addition who are either part time, independent contractors or business owners who aren't counted and out of work, possibly permanently.
And as far as future generations stuck paying off the debt? We are stuck with it now, just give it a few months to see the effects.

Sacrificing the young to add a few more breaths, days, months, years to the less viable. We have removed ourselves from the nature's progression/laws with gender/sexual reorientation... but this takes the cake.
I understand trying to achieve zero death of all causes but not at the cost of societal viability.
In the old days you 'walked out' when your resource use well exceeded your resource worth, and your use of resources would put the tribe's survival in jeopardy. Luckily that's not quite the extent today... but if you are in jeopardy, your viability and survival is between you and nature.
