There is no safe public land in Texas. Whatever there is has a sumbitch with a rifle behind every bush and tree. Good reason to not live in Texas. What part of Detroit you stay? Your family should really lay off the incest thing.

Over dinner one night the wife complemented me on the $2000 per lb wild game meat we were eating. She laughed I kinda smiled in silence and changed the subject. On the other hand many moons ago when I was prepping for an Elk hunt . She says to me ,honey you better get your self an Elk rifle as your deer rifle won't work and walks away smiling . To answer the question mucho dinero.

Hunted in 18 states, Canada, Europe and 5 trips to Africa. Have taken 68 species of game. Including equipment, travel and taxidermy I've probably dropped about a half a mil in the last 40 years.

That may be the case in where you are in TX but I'm up in Amarillo and we have a number of public areas that don't get hunted very hard at all. I spent 3 days hunting Lake Merideth for mulies last year and never saw another hunter. I passed on 2 smallish bucks and finally took one of a co-worker's land. There are several WMAs for waterfowl and small game around me that also rarely see a hunter. Not saying that there aren't areas that are crowded in TX but I know of quite a few that ain't. Just sayin...

All that on a HS teachers salary? You got a side gig? Can a retired guy get in on it? I need to stretch out my fixed income due to the effects of The Corona on the economy. Honestly, pretty cool you've done all that! Geno PS do you have A/C?

Fortunately I can use a lot of my fishing business equipment for hunting and personal fishing. (Boats, etc)
I spent a ton on fishing when I was younger but it led into a great career. Probably was cheaper than a four year degee.

I feel worse about money I didn't spend on hunting and fishing that I could have than I do about the money I did spend.

Over the last 15 yrs. or so I've spent $30K on hunting trips and reloading supplies. My wife is very supportive and has purchased plane tickets and made hunt payments, she goes to the range with me when I am preparing for a trip. Helps with the butchering and wrapping chores after the hunt.

Bought land fifteen years ago for $100K. Monetizing it out means the deer so far were only about $4,000 each. No way to rationally figure the answer to the question but the number is huge. Yeah but you still own the land. You can sell it and make the $100K back (or more). That's not the same as having "spent" it.

You have to consider the alternatives.
I've spent well into the six figures on hunting in the West, Alaska, and Africa. But what were the alternatives? Stare at the TV and leave more money for my kids and grandkids?

Not matter what it cost, it’s been worth it! I’ve made some good deals and wasted money on others but my memories are priceless. I am now hoping my kids get to enjoy it as much as I have.
I’m sure I’ll spend plenty more.
