I was just shooting my 686 Onyx 20. Shot and functioned fine. Didn’t notice anything awry. Then when I was cleaning it to put it away I noticed a slight metallic sound like something was sliding back and forth when I tipped the gun up and down. With the barrel off it’s definitely coming from the receiver section as I tip it. Seems strange, but like I said, the gun functioned fine. Is this normal? Anyone else got a 686 they can check to see if theirs makes this noise too? It’s easier to hear if you take the barrel off.

It’s not normal....take the stock off with a sheet underneath to see if anything comes out...or try and find out what is moving.

Probably the cocking rods sliding in the receiver. The two small diameter rods in the bottom corners of the receiver that you can see when the barrels are off.

Well after further web searching, it appears this is a common issue that some state as normal. Hard for me to buy that. Which is why I was hoping for someone who had one handy to see if theirs makes the same noise. Like I said, it functioned fine. Which is also strange if there are loose parts floating around in there. I’m not comfortable enough in my own ability to take it apart diy.

Definitely not normal. I have a couple of these guns and there is no rattle on either. As Battue said, pull the stock and see what’s going on. If you can’t locate it, contact Cole’s and possibly ship it in for service.

Hammers cocked or released? Does it still do it with the forearm on?

Hammer cocked or fired, barrel/forend on or off, doesn’t matter, you can still hear it. It’s subtle, not obvious unless you give it an aggressive tilt or shake it up and down with the gun pointed vertically.

Odd as it may be, a piece of shot has been known to finds its way in. Just a suggestion.

Mine has a slight rattle if its cocked. Think its the gravity safety to prevent firing upside down in the event of a trip and fall. Seems its a very slight rattle at all times , sure it's the gravity safety.

What? Never heard of such a thing.

Sounded interesting, so I looked it up....learn something new all the time, in that they do have such a thing on their Parallelo
SxS.... but couldn't find any reference to it being part of the 680 series.

I just pulled my 686 12 gauge out of the safe. First, there is no rattle. Second, it fired on snap caps while upside down.

Will yours fire when pointed up?

Could it be the inertia block?
Not sure but a 20ga might have a lighter spring than a 12ga and the "aggressive up and down in the vertical position" may be making the inertia block move back and forth

Parallelo is what I was thinking and got mixed up . Mine does have a slight sound if shaking it hard but its hardly noticeable. And mine did fire on snap caps upside down.
Been looking at the Parallelo and Fausti DEA SxS 28's and that gravity safety is stuck in my brain I guess.

The two of mine are smaller gauges - one a 686EL, the other a 680 series Cole special combo 20/28. The inertia block is not rattling, nor anything else, FYI. And the latter one is factory set to reliably fire 28 gauge.

So out of curiosity I dug my 687 12 ga out of the safe. It does it too, although not as loud or pronounced as my 686 20 ga. It’s also louder in both guns when the safety is ON. When it’s off the rattle is not quite as loud. You’ve got to shake it up and down pretty hard. Since both guns did it, I’m inclined to think it’s normal, but I will get it checked out. Looks like there is an authorized Beretta repair gunsmith about 100 miles away in a town I pass through occasionally.

I have a 12 Onyx and in a December pheasant hunt the safety got very stiff. Because of this I just took it apart and cleaned it out thoroughly... and now I can hear something sliding in there. Cocked, not cocked, assembled or not... There was a bunch of ND red dust, blue glacial clay and other dirt in every corner.

My hearing is not great and I suspect it will not be long before it makes no noise at all...

As I think more about this, it may very well be the flat steel bar the stub of which pushes the safety “on” when the gun is opened on field guns. This small bar fits in a slot on the upper tang, left side, of the receiver. It may well be loose enough on some guns that it can rattle a bit. If this is it, it is fine as is. Were it my gun, I would remove the stock and barrels and see if this may be the cause.

As a side note, I think an automatic safety on any gun is an invention of the devil and won’t have one. On my hunting guns, I use a Dremel to grind off the stub as I’m too lazy to disassemble the gun and take the little bar out. I’ve done this on scores of guns for clients as well.
