I am thinking of rebarreling of a Browning 71 or an 1886 into this caliber. Can anyone suggest a company that could do a good job with this. I have read that either of these two rifles in 4570 can be rebarreled to 50 - 110. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Turnbull does a lot of that work. You also might call Danny Pedersen at Classic Barrel, I had him rebore an 1885 to 50-110. JES will rebore 1886s to .50 Alaskan but you'd have to have enough barrel diameter.

I got in touch with Turnbull before and they wanted over 2,000 just to rebarrel and rechamber

I went Turnbull on an '86 Browning build in 50-110 WCF, if you don't want to do that and have enough meat on existing barrel, call JES and see what twist he offers, bet he can do it, I know he does 22 twist in 50 cal.

It’ll need the loading port and gate modified to get the shells in the tube. Then may need work on the carrier and cartridge guides to get it to feed.

I’ve done a couple 50 conversions on 71s and 86s and it’s not just spinning a barrel on it. Plus it’ll require a refinish. I’m doubtful you’ll find anyone who’ll do it right for much under the $2k Turnbull quoted you.

Go the 71 route if your going to do it, the 348 and 50-110 have the same bolt face dia, so the gate will work without mods I'll bet.

It won’t, I promise. The carrier will be the internal right diameter though.

so a 45-70 or a 348 win in a 1886 or browning 71 will work? Is one easier than the other?

Whatever, that is a man's man rifle. Especially if one plans on firing several rounds in a session.

As mentioned above, the Browning 71 has the right carrier and unlike a lot of the repro 1886 models, it has a shotgun buttstock. That assumes you’re ok with a PG stock. However I do find the shape and forward position of the comb a little awkward to use. After putting up with it for years I finally had it altered and it feels so much better with some relatively minor stock changes.

Fotis rim diameter on the 348 and 50-110 are the same and larger than a 45-70. So that's one change right there if you start with the 348 you won't make. The Kid is saying for a fact that because they don't share similar case geometry the gate area needs to be modified. The 1886 in 45 -70 has a smaller rim diameter so both bolt face and load port need modification to work for 50-110 Kid ? MB

Correct Sir. I used to have a modified endmill used to plunge cut the inside diameter of the carrier on a 45-70 to open it up. I always used a sanding drum on a Foredom tool along with round files to take care of the loading port. The bolt is easy as the only part requiring modification is the two little tits on the bottom of the bolt face that support the bottom of the rim.
