Years ago I loaded some grand slam bullets for elk hunting. Not since Speer changed the formula however and I rarely read about them. I understand Speer is making a new bonded tipped bullet. Anyone have experience with it.

Are you talking about Gold Dots? They are a bonded soft point, and perform very well in my experience.

I need to try those Gold Dots. I've had mixed results wi,.th Speer. The plain ol' Speer BTHP I've had a couple of bad experiences with. I've hit deer well and found blood only to have them run off and die. I think those older BTHPs were a little too tough. But I also have used the 270 grain Semi Spitzer Hot Cores in my 9.3x62 with excellent luck. They put a 1 1/2 hole all the way through. They kill deer like Thor's Hammer.

I've had decades of great performance from 120 Hot Cores in my 257AI. Alas, that bullet has been discontinued...

The 90gr Deep Shocks have been very accurate with excellent terminal performance from a couple of 243. Alas, that line of bullets has been discontinued...

I just love 165 Deep Curls in my 30/06 and 300 Savage, 150gr Deep Curls in 270 WCF and 270WSM, and 120gr Deep Curls in 257 Roberts, 25/06 and 25WSSM. Alas, that line of bullets has been discontinued...

Whither goest the Gold Dots and Impacts???

Only experience on flesh I’ve had with Speer was on deer with the 80 grain Deep Curl out of a Kimber 243. Absolute hammer.

It would be nice if they would figure out what they want to make and stick with it. No experience with the new "Impact" but they sound good. If you try them and like them, I'd stock up!

I love shooting big game with $.17 bullets. Like you're an outlaw or something.

Smokey262,

The Deep-Shoks were indeed great bullets, but the original intent when they were designed was to produce a "premium" big game bullets at cup-and-core prices. As it turned out they were too expensive to make and sell at anything approaching a C&C price-point.

I believe the Gold Dot rifle bullets do that pretty well now. If they shoot and perform as well as they're priced, I'll never look at Accubond or Partitions again just based on price alone.

It's amazing how cheap cup and core bullets still kill animals, despite the availability of premium bullets that can go for up to a buck a piece. smile

Not 17 cents, but in .375" Speer has 235 and 270 gr offerings. They're more like 32 and 44 cents. Nothing "outlaw" about those Speer bullets - for anything in the US, possibly excepting the biggest bears.

Just bought some 285 gr GSs for 36 cents, on a closeout sale. Think I'll give them a try this fall. The redesign eliminated the steel base insert. As if that would matter anywhere in the US or Canada.

At the other extreme, knew two old-timers (sadly, both gone) who could have filled several semi-trailers with deer they shot in NYS and CT. Both insisted the original Speer 52 gr .224" HP was better than any other .224" bullet then available. Hornet to Swift. The two never met, but were adamant about this.

I've used the 145 grain Grand Slam in my 7 RM to kill two axis this past Friday. A doe at 189 yards an a nice buck at 160 yards. Both complete pass throughs and DRT. My .270 loves the 130 grain Grand Slam.

I've been waiting for the 6.5/140 Deep Impact for my 6.5 Swede and my 6.5 PRC to make it out to retailers, but Speer keeps putting it off. I've emailed them a couple of times, and first it was December 2019 release, then Spring 2020. In the meantime, I'll keep shooting Accubonds and Sciroccos.

I don't think I've ever killed anything bigger than a crow, or maybe a groundhog, with a Speer bullet. This past November I did miss a deer with one. When I got back to the truck I thought about calling Speer to tell them how badly their bullet failed. wink

Back in the 80's I shot a small bull moose in the forehead from about 20 yards with a 250 grain Grand Slam from my .338 Win. mag. Had a whole about 3 inches in diameter going in and no exit hole. This was an early fall fork horn moose with velvet on the antlers. It should of exited with the angle I had. I believe a 250 grain Partition or Barnes X would of had a much smaller entrance hole and an exit hole. Shot the rest of the Grand Slams at the range and stayed with the wonderful Partition until late 80's when I switched to the Barnes X flavors.

I shot a similar moose at about 60 yards and the shot angle was about the same and bullet placement the same. The bullet was a 250 grain X that had a small entrance hole and a exit hole out the back of the moose's head about the size of my fist.
