Yep. They sold them at Easter in the TG&Y 5¢ and 10¢ stores, for a nickle.
Now everybody is about as scared of salmonella as they are the 'Rona and they won't do that anymore. frown

I got 50+ of the little buggers running around here too, and 2 weeks to go on the duck eggs in the incubator. I like having some animals around. Something has been taking my rabbits at pretty good rate though, and has thus far eluded my traps

Yes, I remember the blue one, they passed them out at school. Raised it up then suddenly, one day we had chicken for dinner.

I would always wind up with two or three. I would get to keep them in a cardboard box with a light bulb for warmth next to my bed for a few days until the folks were tired of the smell. Then they would go out to Junior's place in the country so they could "run free like chickens are supposed to" and be happy. Later in the year, Junior's mom would always drop off a dressed chicken or two for letting them have my pets to enjoy. Took me years to make the connection.

Yes, It was only at dinner time that I recalled a buddy saying something about a blue chicken head in the garbage.

We also had a rabbit cage in the back yard. When they disappeared GranDad would say a dog must have got them. I was about 8 before I figured that out.

Too many brown bears around the yard for me to fool with livestock. Bender lives in an undesirable suburb.... civilized.... smile

Growing up, I butchered my share of chickens. always felt sorry for them when I whacked their heads off.

Turkeys, however, were another matter. He he.

Yeah we’re civilized. We’ve had brown and black bears, a wolf and a few coyotes through the yard. Time to stand a rifle by the back door. 😏

bender,

post some pics when they're grown to killin' size so I can see what I'm getting next year.

My hens are still laying well, so they're not going in the stew pot anytime soon. And I learnt my lesson about those ugly as Cornish Crosses.

My neighbor had some egg layers. One day, my two year old chocolate lab came cruising around the corner of the property with one in his mouth. I was thinking, "oh hell, this is gonna be messy." I called him to heel and told him to drop, that bird went cruising back home. Whew....i was relieved.
