Howdy to all . I recently bought a Featherweight classic 30-06- claw extractor w/ serial# G365XXX . Wondering if anyone could point out a link or location where I could find out what year this rifle was built . I'm guessing mid-to-late 90's but that's just a guess- looks like it primarily sat in a safe . Thanks, Tortoise .

I think winmod70 (or someone here) posted a thread on these classics and DOM'S. Things like that should be made a sticky here, but they often get swept under the rug. Just a wild azzed guess, but a 6 digit classic in that number range would be closer to late 90's. But there are guys here that can tell you for sure.. Secondly, those classic featherweights sure are nice. When I was in reno a few months ago, I damn near bought a pristine 30-06 fwt for $500.00... I need another 30-06 like I need a hole in my head, so I passed, but still kick myself in the azz for not just buying it!!

Should be 2002, last year of the 6 digits.

There we go. I know you started a thread on this topic at one time. Rick needs to make that a sticky here..

Great . Thanks for the info . I know very little about the Classic - what changes were made to the rifles after '02 , that diminished it's quality ? Tortoise

I have and have had several later 7 digit serial # guns with zero issues and shoot lights out, cycle and extract perfect, etc....
I’ve yet to see a bad one. I’m sure a lemon is boxed up and sent out daily from a gun plant somewhere, same for vehicles and women 😂

I had one bad 7 digit but this was one of the last ones out of the plant made in 05. Right now I have a 7 digit stainless in a 300 wsm. Just had it out to the range looks like she’s going to be a shooter.

Weather permitting, I'm taking the Mod. 70 to the range tomorrow - I'll file a report on whether it " shoots" or not .

That's a nice rifle. I believe redneck used to collect those (stainless/walnut classics). Yours is a 5 digit I'd guess it was made somewhere around '93...

No changes. It's just that the early guns, pre 2000, almost never have any issues. They stopped production in 2006. From 2000-2006 quality gradually declined. Most of the guns early 2000's guns are fine. In fact most of the ones made as late as 2006 are fine. It's just that the closer you get to a 2006 manufacturing date the more likely you are to have issues.

The 6 digit vs 7 digit SN is an easy way to identify roughly when made. The ones with 6 or less digits are early guns and tend to bring a small premium because odds are you're getting a good rifle. I wouldn't automatically discount a 7 digit rifle, it's just that the odds are a little better of getting one that needs some attention. Even at that most of the issues can be corrected. It is usually small stuff that should have been caught before getting out the door.

“Most” is the operative word on the five-digits. I have had four that were really nice, one bad one that slipped through the cracks. That one has the rear receiver ring bored visibly off center.
