Old stuff lasts longer. You can replace the element(s) and anode cheaply and easily. If you are at all handy you should look into just rebuilding what you have. I have seen more than a few element changes go bad. Old ones corroded in and can't get them out, Or, you ge them changed and they leak. Better yet, your weak old tank starts leaking after the stress of getting the old corroded ones out.

Our deep well water will build up sludge, even over the lower element. About ten years, and it's time for a new heater.

You are supposed to drain the thing every 6 months, then turn the cold on to stir it, drain again. No one ever does. I have, a few times. Over 20 years.

Mine just [bleep] the bed. Brand new Marathon sitting there now. The big question is do they warranty it, and I get the new one free? Or do they reject it, and I will have pay the Co-op $200?
Doesn't matter too much too me. High limit failed, blew a pipe. We caught it and had little mess. Got it fixed, and while waiting for the dope to dry, It popped the pressure relief valve.
We caught that before it made too much mess. I though it was because both valves were closed. So, I turned the breaker back on, and we all showered did dishes... Getting ready for bed when it popped again. Again, we caught it quick. By now, I know what going on.
Anyway, we dodged several major floods. In that light, the money and aggravating doesn't seem too bad.
