CDNN has these Hawkeyes in 308, 30-06, 270, and 280. The 30-06 specs says 20 inch barrel versus 22 on the rest. The only Hawkeyes I'm aware of with 20 inch barrels are the RL models, or Ultralights as they are more commonly known. Did Ruger make the Hawkeye Ultralight in a 30-06 in the blued/synthetic configuration? Or is this possibly a misprint on the CDNN ad? Anyone on here bought one of these? I love the Ruger Ultralights and $500 sounds like a great deal on one if that is really what they are selling.

I tried to get a call on this from CDNN back in December and they gave conflicting info about the actual length of the barrel.

Get the product sku, call and verify with Ruger.

I'm betting it is the regular 22" model.

For what it's worth, the same product # pops on Brownell's as a 22" barrel.

Yes Ruger did make one, and I had one. That was before my last shoulder surgery and it was just too much on my bum shoulder. I really liked the way it felt. The trigger was good. The balance felt slightly different from the typical Ruger UL, not in a good or bad way, just different. I guess the synthetic stock shifted the weight.

When you do a google search on Ruger model 37183, it comes back with conflicting info. CDNN really needs to go pull one of these things out of the box, see what it is and describe it correctly for their customers. That is if they want to sell them.

I guess you could always order one and before signing the paperwork at the FFL take a look and refuse it if it is not as described.

My friend bought one from CDNN in 30-06, the ones on sale now. It was a 20" barrel. I asked him just now to measure it again to be sure. It is 20". He said the box said it is a model 37183, and it also says: M77RL 30.06, 20" blue ultra. So I assume it is an Ultra Light. He bought it for $499. It is a synthetic stock, blued action/barrel, silver bolt.

Bought one of the 20" .30-06 rifles for a SIL.. I'm still jealoous. Did the scope zeroing and loved shooting the thing.

Bought an All Weather Hawkeye in .280 Rem (not from CDNN, so I paid more). It is a tack driver and my go elk hunting this fall with my 7mm RM. It likes the various140g bullets I've tried and the new Federal Terminal Ascent 155g. Load development has been drop dead easy.using duplicate 5-round ladders with 0.5g powder increments. Six shots into .875" with 140g TTSX. Three-shot scope check .75" with 162g AMAX, two shot scope check .70" with 140g North Fork SS-HP. Love the rifle.

Pick the one you like and go for it.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Sorry for the late reply. I have not read the Fire in a while.

I did not ask my friend the weight of his rifle. However, I own one I bought years ago, but not from CDNN. It too is a 20", synthetic, 30.06, Ultra Light, but it is a matt stainless model instead of blued. I just weighed it, and it weighs exactly 6 lbs., 8 oz., or in other words, 6 1/2 lbs.

Interesting.

The website lists the .280 at 7.2lb with a 22" bbl.

.308 at 7.25lb with a 22" bbl.

.30-06 at 7.5lb with a 20" bbl.

So 2" less barrel equals a gain of .25oz?

6lb 8oz sounds good!

I wonder if the .308 weight is misrepresented as well.

I could like bobbing the bbl to 20" and reboring to .358 at 6.5lbs.

Besides the 2" shorter barrel, I think the barrel contour is slimmer as well.

I also own the same rifles, Ruger Hawkeyes, matt stainless, synthetic stock, 22" barrels, 35 Whelen, 30-06 and 280 Rem., so comparing them all, it looks to me like the Ultra Light has a slimmer barrel.

I just found my digital caliper and measured both barrel thickness' at the muzzle.

My 35 Whelen Ruger Hawkeye, SS/syn, 22" barrel measures .5630".

My 30-06 Ruger Hawkeye Ultra Light, SS/syn, 20" barrel measures .5040".

Smaller contour on the Ultra Light, hence the lighter barrel and lighter rifle.

I suspect with rings and the scope of my choice (Leupold VX3i 2.5-8), it should bring it up from 6 1/2 lbs. to 7lbs. even.

I have not yet mounted a scope on this Ultra Light yet, so I cannot give you a definitive weight.

Interesting, thanks for the intel.

An '06 rebore to the Whelen has possibilities.

You're welcome!

Yeah, reboring to 35 Whelen would make a very light Elk backpacking rifle.

I wonder if there is enough 'meat' left in that Ultra Light contour barrel to increase from .308 to .358?

.6040-.358=.146

Cut rifle's website says "The barrel wall thickness must meet or exceed 125 thousandths per side (250 total) for safety, at the muzzle".
