I'm sure this has been answered, but I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.
I'm looking to drive a 125 Sierra ProHunter at about 2500fps, using Blue Dot or IMR4227. I've also got about a pound of SR4759 left. I've seen references that Seafire has a lot of info on Blue Dot, but I can't send a PM due to my newbie status in the forum.
Thanks in advance!

The first edition of the LEE reloading manual has a good section on working up reduced loads.

24hr Campfire Search Engine LINKBlue Dot should work. I used it with 120's and 140's in the 7mm-08. I think we got up around 2,400fps with 120's and a stiffer charge.
Now with even more aplomb

I use blue dot for reduced velocity loads in rifle cartridges.
A word of caution - you can fit enough blue dot in a case to reach extreme pressure levels. These are reduced velocity, not reduced pressure. Double check what you are doing.
General guide lines: -Fill a case to the brim (overflowing) with BD, level it, and weight the powder -20% to 30% of that overflow weight is a good starting point for load work up -50 to 60% of that overflow weight will be max pressure I use a regular rifle primer in 7mm08 without ignition issues; I use magnum primers in large cases such as 375H&H.
As a point of reference, my 7mm08 load is 23.0 grains blue dot behind a 120 Sierra Pro Hunter for 2,410fps and 1" groups. QL predicts 2,405fps and 42kpsi (matches extremely well).
Hope that helps.

Thanks to all for the quick responses. gt3901m, your 7-08 load is very similar to what I had in mind for the 308. I'll get to work.

Yes, welcome aboard Mr Keller.
You should also be able accomplish your goal with 4759 or 4227, search the internet for PDF's of IMR Reloading Manuals from the before the Hodgdon era, say 2003 or earlier.

Good morning Lokeller, There's a lot of ways to achieve your goal. I'll post the full quick load below, with the disclaimer that I have no experience with the pistol power in a rifle cartridge trick, and not all pistol powders will act like blue dot if tried in a rifle, so, do so at your own risk. Personally, I'd be more inclined to go with 51gr of H4831 behind your 125gr bullet:
Cartridge : .308 Win. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 125, Sierra SP 2120
Useable Case Capaci: 54.041 grain H2O = 3.509 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.800 inch = 71.12 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Hodgdon H4831 SC *T
Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 0.98% of nominal charge.

If you wanted a reduced power charge, another powder that scales nicely is H4895. It's well tested and know to avoid secondary pressure spike and other risks associated with under charged cases:
Cartridge : .308 Win. (SAAMI)

Again, not tested data, but computer simulations that may provide sub-optimal results when used outside of normal loading practices. I'd also avoid reduced loads of ball type powders. I've used a case full of mil surplus ball powders similar in burn rate to H-870 in a wide variety of rifle for surprisingly accurate reduced loads. It's another way to achieve a reduced load and mitigate your risks, but for your purposes, it would be too slow.

I have used H4895 w 125-130 grain bullets at about 2500 FPS with great success for the kids. I even got to where I would use that load when hunting an area that I knew would be 100 yards or less max range. Just got to where I liked the low recoil load myself.

I've been using 25 grains of 4227 in my daughter's 7/08 with a 120 grain bullet. Works great, very accurate and almost zero recoil. I'd guess it would work just as well in a 308.

With 4895, 2500fps would only be about a 15% reduction of a full load and very close to what is considered to be a published starting load for that powder. Starting loads generally run around 10% but 4895 has more flexibility.
I would just try the starting load first. That load would be more in the normal range of things and should work very well and would be my choice. I have had good results at the 80% level in many calibers across the board. Low recoil and good accuracy. I normally only use the faster powders for cast bullets.

Anybody have a subsonic 308 load that works well?
