First off guys and gals I’m new to this forum, well kind of. I have been on here reading a lot of good info for the past few months, but decided to join and get some insight. Recently I picked up a new 300 win mag and I need to put some glass on her. This rifle is going to be used for hunting purposes not the 1000 yard shot. I have owned lots of different scopes in the past, Nikon, Vortex, Bushnell, Leupold, etc... Any good suggestions out there on a good scope that will hold up to this round? I do not want to break the bank on a scope, so yes I have been looking at the Athlon scopes I imagine Doug will have some input for me. Any help would be great!
Thanks, Andrew

I’ll second that. Meopta if you can afford $400 won’t find a better deal. If your budget is more limited I’d suggest Burris.

There is another thread with the same question. Scope for 300WM? It didn't specify a price point but most of the response were mid level scopes.
The Leupold Freedom line is a good buy, about like the VX-2 which was similar to the old VX-III. No experience with the Athlon. Weaver has a reputation for holding up well, but not sure if this was a carry over from the old steel tubed models and if it fully applies to the current generation of Weavers or not?

Thanks for the info guys. I will look at the Meoptas Greg. There will be occasions when I will shoot out to 500 yards on occasion. I’m not sure if a 3x9 would meet my expectations for this Gun. Like I said this gun will only be used for larger game, or maybe destroy a wild hog for fun. Tejano I have always like Leupold especially their upper lines where you can get special turrets for your specific round and rifle. I haven’t bought a weaver scope in yours. In fact the only weaver I have is on a old .22LR with a mannlicher stock. Like a real old weaver!!!!!!

I suggest finding a good used Leupold 3.5x10x40mm. Long enough tube for a long action and good range of magnification for hunting.

Do you dial, use reticle or Kentucky windage to reach you your “500yd” max?

Can you still get the special turrets for those Leupolds? If money was no option I would have bought a Blaser and put a Zeiss or swavorsky. So what’s the benefit of going with the smaller zoom? I know that the smaller zoom scopes are simpler and Easier to use, but will a still be able to get a good shot on a muley or elk at 500 yards?

Bater I have a long range 308 I use for 500 plus. I typically use Kentucky windage lol. I would like to get were I can use the turrets and stuff like if I went on an Audad hunt and had to shoot 600 yards across a mountain that would be ideal instead of using the old school way. Those are just future plans I need to practice more just don’t have time. In my younger days I had lots of time to practice long range shots and shoot whitetails at long range. Now my longest shots where I hunt are around 200 or 300 yards. Don’t get me wrong I have the capability to shoot them at longer distances.

Grab the Meopta 4.5x14x44 with the Z plex. Medium range turrets. It be all you would need here in SC. Mil dots and finer cross hairs get lost way before legal hours is over. When you sit an hour after official sunset those scopes will have you back at the truck before everyone else. GreggH

GreghH you are exactly right. I have a upper class Nikon with Mildots and it actually does good in later hours of the day. My others do not though.

If you aren’t in a hurry. Deals come up int the classifieds often.
If you are in a hurry, contact Doug.
Meopta meopro May be the best hunting scope for the money right now.

For a little more money the NF SHV 3-10x with Forceplex would probably meet your requirements better than most scopes, IMO.
My recommendation (which may not be exactly what you think you need) is also the SWFA SS 3-9x.

My recommendation (which may not be exactly what you think you need) is also the SWFA SS 3-9x. Good call. Since the OP distinctly said it was a hunting scope, not longer range, I'd forget the dialing/funky reticles BS and go simple, and a Sig BDX scope would be my last choice in this scenario.
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.
