Have just gotten an 1899 rifle(?) in 25-35.The Savage letter which came with it says it is a carbine with a 20 inch barrel in 25-35 made in 1904. All of that checks out on the gun. What doesn't match is the butt stock with crescent butt plate. All parts have matching serial numbers. I can find no reference to carbine having that stock. Any one have any insights?

Post a few pics if you can Darrell. I have a 99C with crescent butt/plate, checked, numbers match, but does not letter. JTC and others here believe it to be factory. Likely an employee rifle.

Could be special order, or have been sent back for repair from 1919-1923 when they weren't making carbine buttplates.
Pictures would help us eliminate an alteration by an enterprising gunsmith.
Does it have the saddle ring?

Could be some previous owner just changed it out to suit his taste. It happens a lot today and I sure it happened to a fair degree in the past too.

It has the saddle ring and butt plate/butt have serial no, to match the receiver. No metion in the letter to indicate a return to savage.

Work orders weren't always logged, but usually were I think. Wouldn't be the first saddle ring carbine we've seen with a different buttplate, but it's in the single digits.
And ANY saddle ring carbine in 25-35 is rare.
Looking forward to pics, if you can do it.

Could be special order, or have been sent back for repair from 1919-1923 when they weren't making carbine buttplates. Good chance. I have a 1913 1899H 30-30 that has a later straight stock and metal butt plate. Both the butt and plate are numbered to the receiver. When I lettered it, the letter did state that it was returned for unknown work in November 1921; more than likely, this is when the stock was replaced.

I wonder if it has the normal heavy carbine (saddle ring) barrel . 25 - 35. Isn't there a matching mark under the forend wood on the front of the receiver that matches the barrel to the receiver ?
