I have a thread going about reloading seating depth.....but I ran into a problem with my dies that I think the writers might could answer in case you don't browse the reloading forum.

I am trying to load my 6.5-284 with a shorter length to get farther off the lands. I initially had the bullet (140 Grain AB) into the lands at 3.15" OAL. I wanted to try and load down to 3.11ish and then maybe to 3.08". Well when I started to adjust down my seating on the die....it bottomed out only allowing me to seat to 3.145. Lowering the die into the press further would crush the neck on the case.

Why would this happen? The die set is a redding deluxe die set 6.5-284.

I did buy this set used, but everything seems right on it until now.

You need to adjust the seater stem, not screw the die body further down into the press.

Unless it’s the wrong stem....why would the stem be that short? Tried calling Redding, but of course they are closed in NY.

You could try to buy one at MidwayUSA They might have one, or RCBS in Oroville, CA

Call Redding. I had the same problem with .223 dies and they sent a different seater stem. Great service!

I had the same issue with a set of Redding 6x45 dies. They sent a new stem which fixed the problem.
