It’s time to put a new AC unit in. The current unit uses R22 so it’s no longer in compliance and it’s hard to find somebody to repair them.
I received a quote of $6500 cash for a 5 Ton Ruud with a new heater, installed. Does anybody have experience with this brand?

It was "sister" to Rheem some years back. (80's-90's) I assume it still is. was a very popular builders grade system, reasonable cost and better than avg dependability. Trane and Carrier led the pack back then.

My only question is why you would need a 5 ton unit - unless your house is about 5,000 ft/sq...

He's in Texas. I have a 5 ton here in South FL, for a 3,000 ft house.

500sqft/ton is an approximation around here. Tons of factors go into really calculating it.

Right and going to “big” can cause more problems then going to small.

When I was still in the HVAC business (commerical) Ruud/Rheem had a reputation for high quality equipment without some to the high tech fluff you may find on Trane or Carrier. I don't think you would go wrong with the Ruud and the price does not sound bad at all for 5 tons of cooling.

I would but it in my house.

My Ruud unit is over 20 years old and other than replacing the fan motor 5 years ago (I replaced it) it still works great.

Well guys. I was able to talk the contractor down to $5000 installed. We are going with a Carrier brand 16ser. comfort series. 4Ton with new heater. From everybody I’ve visited with, and the fact that I have 3 zones in the house the 4ton is plenty. It should also lower the humidity level in the he house tremendously over a 5 ton.

Ruud is a good brand. But, that price is high. At least for here in south FL, I do a lot better than that.

I have Ruud units in several of my houses.

That 16 Seer Carrier should last you a good long while. I just replaced a Carrier unit at my house last year that was here when I bought the place 22 years ago. It wasn't a modern high efficiency unit, however. My electric bill was cut almost in half after replacing the old Carrier with a high efficiency unit.

I would suggest that you purchase a HVAC load calculator program to design your system. I used one when I did my furnace/AC. The system must be designed to fit your house. It won't work right if it is too big or too small. The correctly sized system for your climate zone and will work at a higher duty cycle.

I have two 3 ton units in a 3000 sq foot house. It’s hot down here! I have American Standard.

The Rheem/Ruud brand units seem to run well for a long time if the install is done right.

Lowering the size from 5 ton to 4 ton will reduce humidity because the compressor needs to be running to remove the moisture in the air.

I imagine your old AC was as oversized as most of the old furnaces are around here in the north country.
