I found a NIB Vanguard Compact in 6.5 CM for $350, which seems like a great price. The Weatherby site show that it has a 20" #1 contour barrel. I've never handled one of these and wonder if they are butt-heavy, like a Remington Seven, with the stock extension installed.
If you have any actual experience with this specific rifle, I'm interested in your opinion.

I have a Howa .308 Lightweight that was butt-heavy, I don't know it that is a close enough comparison. I have made a few changes to address that, but in its OEM form, it was right whippy at the muzzle.
It is a great woods gun with the advantage of reach over my .30-30 and .45-70.

I'm considering picking up a lightweight Howa barreled action (or a Vanguard Compact, since I believe they are the same barreled action with few differences).

I have messed with a Weatherby Compact 7mm-08 that my grandson has. It is somewhat butt heavy. It has been a long time since I had a Rem 7 in my hands but I don't think the Weatherby is as butt heavy as the Rem 7, if memory serves correctly.

McMillan Sako Classic stock and an aftermarket barrel in Remington sporter contour, still 20 inches long but heavier enough to balance it better. I didn't help keep the weight down by taking a Leupold 2.5-8X36 VX-3i and Talley LWs off and putting a Nightforce 3-10X42 SHV on a pic rail, either. It's still very manageable and sits in the hands very well, no whippy muzzle now. Length stayed the same, too, which was my main concern.
