I’d like to find another 99 F in 358

I had one 25 years ago, still haunts me to this day, selling it. Now I got a BLR and a RAR, find myself packing the ruger more and more

I was danger close to grabbing one of those RARs and talked myself out of it. Then, Gringo Loco had to throw a stainless/laminate pistol grip BLR up for sale. I couldnt avoid that one.

Yes, but nothing I’d call ‘conclusive’. Open sights with some basic Winchester PP I had left. She’s a shooter, and I believe she deserves better quality ammo to prove it. I can see a TTSX running through a black bear this fall.
Honestly, I’m thinking a fixed 2.5x and I might not touch anything else here for deer at home.
My 7600 is going to get jealous this year.

That 2.5 fixed would be an excellent choice. Not many wrong choices in bullets for it, just preferences IMO.

I ran a 2-7 leupold on mine for a bit, bought a 1.75-6x32 off horse1 on here, it’s now perfect..

I have a 1.5-6 that would be the perfect magnification range, but it's a Meopta.
1.5-6x42 is just too 'big'.

Was just thinking of getting a Win 70 extreme weather in short action and having rebored to .358w. Would make a fun thumper for Michigan woods where I hunt.

Most all sporting cartridges are more alike than different. Is the 358W my choice for Dall’s sheep? No, but if someone else is paying, I will use it and it will likely get the job done. Same with pronghorns and so on. Lots of different things work. Today, I don’t care as much about chambering but do care about the rifle and the bullets.

Personally I shot the 358 for a decade, and only went to the 260 because I started hunting the edge of fields where shots are on average 120yds (half at 40 yards, half at 190 or so yards).

If my shots were all under 150.. I would still be shooting my 358.. you can eat right up to the hole with that one... and you don’t lose a bunch of meat, the bullet goes all the way through unless you Texas heart shoot them, and they die without a bunch of shot like a 243 or other higher velocity round where you get a bunch of meat damage.

Now I understand newbie’s and Nacies who don’t know how to follow a blood trail and just want a DRT round... but if you only shoot one deer a year, I like taking as much meat as possible.

Hornady makes .358 Win ammunition also. Interestingly, a quick look on Winchester's Ammunition site doesn't even show it in their line up. I looked because on that link of yours, the muzzle velocity isn't spec'd. Winchester does show 356 Win though and claims 2460 fps for it. Spec listed for Hornady on MidwayUSA says 2475 fps. Midway also has Buffalo Bore for a bit more $ and that indicates a 225gr Sierra moving 2545 fps from a 22" Ruger Hawkeye.

I should know better than to read these threads. Some years ago the shooting press was writing about 45/70’s with 20” barrels and receiver sights. One appeared in my safe with several boxes of heavily loaded hard cast bullets. I never shot it. I sold it and got 60 cents on the dollar. I was glad to have it gone.
I read this stuff and although I know a 358 isn’t especially good for anything, I find myself thinking about getting one. Pure madness.

Me too. It's literally impossible to improve on my 7-08 I built in 2007 and that I have evolved over the years (stock and optics). I don't like recoil, I haven't shot my 9.3x62 since 2007. Why do I want one of these......
