I would’ve said water moccasin till I looked closely at its head. Looks too slender to be a WM.

The snakes and I get along pretty well here at the farm. When they're around, I know they're taking care of the mice and such. When they go away the rodents roam the house at will and I get dropping everywhere. The first time ever saw this one, he was sliding in under the kitchen door and heading for a hole in the floor.
Every year this one and his little brother leave their skins hanging from a maple tree outside my bedroom just to let me know they're still on the job.

Black Rat Snake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantherophis_obsoletusThat's tiny compared to the specimen that used to inhabit the pile of rotting fenceposts out back. I got a stick under that one and lifted him up to shoulder height and he had 2 feet on the ground on either side. I'm going to say he was an 11 footer. He was also as big around as my arm. I haven't seen Mister Big for a while, but there are two of his offspring that hang out around the place. One is a bit smaller than this one. I like them because they keep the rodents down to a minimum. They're about as docile as you'll find in any snake. I once deliberately tried to provoke Mister Big and it took a good deal of prodding before he went after me. They act like they're cobras, but they strike with their mouths closed. This one? After I took the picture I twiddled his tail. All he did was slide a bit further up the wall. He's still peeking out from the eaves. I think he's waiting for another sparrow to come back to roost. An 11' black snake... really?
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Snakes will make people crap all over themselves. I chased my boy and son in law with a live rattlesnake some years ago. They were squealing like little girls. I laughed until I hurt.

Renegade50 would’ve hacked it up like okra for gumbo and then burned that shed down.

I like the note to burglars. Does it say the doorknob is hooked to a shotgun shell? lol

It’s funny my dad hated snakes with a passion. I have zero fear of them and think nothing of picking one up, as I do quite often. On the other hand I can’t stand spiders. Hate the damn things worse than taxes. My dad on the other hand wasn’t bothered by them at all.
I know where I got it from. My older sister was terrified of spiders. She couldn’t stand to even look at one on TV and would run out of the room screaming if one came on the screen. I saw that as kid and I think it stuck with me. I’m not even nearly as bad as her, but I still don’t like them.
I think fear of certain critters is all learned behavior. Some say it’s genetic programming or instinctual. I think that’s BS.

Same here. Dad says a dead snake is a good snake. I figure they all have a purpose, and when they leave me alone, I return the favor. Once as a kid, we were leaving to go someplace, and when we walked out the back door, there was a large black snake climbing the inside corner of the house and disappearing into the attic through a hole in the eave. His head was already in the attic, and the tail was about a foot off the ground. Biggest snake I had seen to that point. Mom about flipped out. My bedroom was in the attic, and I told Mom, “Hey, you hate mice, and here is the answer to your prayers, and you ain’t happy with that either!” Earned me no points...

Snakes don’t really bother me too much, unless they’re where I need to be and they got a nasty attitude. Belligerent snakes won’t be tolerated, but I look on non-venomous as a good neighbor. Wifey kills them near the house, but with mice and chipmunks in the flower beds, that’s where they need to be! I used to work with a guy who was scared chitless of them. We got outta the van one day at a job, and Doug jumped 6 feet in the air and hit the ground running. There was a 9 or 10” garter snake in the grass! He got whizzed off at me cause I just moved it away instead of killing it. Some people are such babies! 7mm
