have a kimber sweet swede, have always shot max load of 4064 and 129 gr. hornady bullet always shoots right around and usually better shot a 7 pointer over a scrape a few years ago with it, took two faltering steps and was down for the count. I also shoot a nosler 125 gr. in it, shoots the same as the hornady.

Thanks for all the input folks, I still haven't had a chance to try the 129's & H4350 yet, maybe tomorrow. If the H 4350 doesn't pan out I'll try the other powder combos.

In my Tikka T3, my 129 Hornady load is 47.5 grains H4831 and a CCI primer. I seat the bullets to the tight spot in the tapered throat.
The largest group this load has produced at 10 yards is 3/4".

First since you are running a Kimber M96 I'm not going to tell you to run the same loads as a M70 FWT or a Ruger 77 MKII. Use your own discretion.

But, POP was good enough to run me the following QL for use in getting 129 SP's to try to shoot to same POI as my 130 TSX's.

FWIW ...

Cartridge : 6.5 x 55 Swedish
Bullet : .264, 129, HDY SP 2620
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.120 inch or 79.25 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch or 558.8 mm
Powder : Hodgdon H4350

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

I have found IMR 4350 to be more accurate in all 3 of my 6.5 x 55s, over H 4350... velocity was close to the same...

using data from a 1966 Speer manual, and IMR 4350.. and working up their load data for a 120 grain bullet ( but substituting the 129)... I chronographed the velocity at 3100 out of my 29 inch barrel Mauser... the Speer manuals velocity was a lot lower, but they were measuring it out of an 18 inch barrel also..

But the load gave an inch group at 100 yds, with open sights, and someone with good eye sight shooting it!

This rifle is a surplus Swedish Sniper rifle tho...

Standard bullet weight in 6,5x55 is 140 grains and most barrels are made to shoot well with that bullet weight. In other words, the problem might be your barrel. You could also try different bullet types, as barrels often like some bullets and dislike others.

I've had a Kimber sporterized Model 96 since 1995 and the 129 gr. Hornady (#2620), not the 129 gr. SST, has become my favorite bullet for it. It shoots most all the heavier bullets well but the 129 Hornady's shoot a bit faster & flatter. Never had much luck accuracy-wise with 120 gr. and lighter stuff. With the aforementioned 129 gr. Hornady (#2620), try IMR-4831 or RL-19 in amounts of around 46 to 47 grains. Works well in the cut-down military barrel of my Kimber Swede. I also seat the bullets out pretty far for a total cartridge O.A.L. of about 3.000 to 3.010. I also free-floated the barrel due to some uneven barrel contact with that plastic stock that Kimber used, but eventually discovered that it shoots better with a pressure point at the end of the forend.

47.5 gr of H-4831SC has worked real well in my 20" Barrelled Swede. Averages 2550fps and shoots under an inch at 100.

I just picked up a Ruger MKII Swede and I'm trying to develop a youth load. I used 2ndtimes load of 42.5 IMR 4350 with a Win 8 1/2 and a 120gr Speer spitzer. 100 yd 5 shot groups today 1.1". Looks like a winner!

Thanks for the Quickload info. I'm starting at 43.0 grains of H4350 and will work up from there.

I still haven't had time for a range test yet. Perhpas one day this week grin

I shoot the 129 grs. IL in a T3 Varmint with a stiffer load of Vihtvuori N550..... it is a real winner..... 5 shots normally result in one big hole at 100 meters.. I haven't used it on game yet, but I intend to try it on boars up to 200 lbs......

What do you think how it will perform?

greetings,
Gerry

Today, I finally had time to range test the 129 grain Hornady and 43.0 grains of H 4350 load.

The load clocked 2,456 fps (roughly 100 fps less than the load data predicted) and the groups averaged 1.308 inches @ 100 yards.

Not too shabby for a 90 year old reworked military rifle with a Tasco scope (the optical quality really sucks frown ) in 90 + degree weather and me pulling the trigger. grin grin

In the next reloading batch I'm gonna move the powder charge up (in 1/2 grain increments) to 45 grains and see how it goes. I hope to end up at 2,650-2,700 fps +/-(46-47 grain maximum load) and shrink the groups to the 1 inch or < range.

On a side note, after the chronographing and group shooting was finished, I spent the six remaining rounds on some clay pigeons at the 200 yard line. It were no trouble at all to powder 'em every time I squeezed the trigger. grin

The more I shoot the venerable Swede the better I like it.

Thanks again to everyone for all the input on the 129 grain loads.

FWIW

For many years I had a sporterized model 96 with the barrel shortened to 25". Military chamber/throat dimensions. For some reason, seating depth had almost no discernable affect on accuracy. I gave up playing with seating depth in this rifle and just used max c.o.l.

Hornady 129s were just as accurate as 140s (Hornady and Remington) in that rifle. RL19 was the first powder I tried and was consistenly accurate with a near max load. If I wasn't a tinkerer I could have stopped there. Later I found that 46 grains of H4350 give slightly better velocity with very good accuracy than RL19. RL22 was equally good with 129 and 140s. I actually found the 129s with either powder were as accurate as Norma's Diamond Line moly coated match load using 139s. Sub MOA groups were typical using sandbags. Anything over 1.5" was operator error....

Almost forgot, Varget was also very accurate but would display pressure symptoms at 150 to 200 fps slower than H4350.

Have fun and keep good notes.

I have used the Hornady 129gr. bullet in my M96 and the Ruger MK II that I have, RL#22, and a fed. 210 LR. primer, worked very for me.
