The sleeping giant is waking!

The state demo's antics late last fall hopefully got the attention of the many that have been sitting out elections for some time.

I do believe this is what happened. There was also a full slate of good candidates to oppose the local parlor socialists. Unfortunately, the school board candidates were the usual type of losers. Staunton has attracted a lot of hipsters who love a trendy downtown, which other than some restaurants contains virtually nothing any of the average folks of the area actually want to buy.

I read this story this morning and I hope it portends a national trend.

Three Democratic members of the Staunton, Virginia, city council were ousted by Republicans on Tuesday despite receiving more votes than they did four years ago.

Republican candidates Mark Robertson, Amy Darby, and Steve Claffey all joined incumbent Andrea Oakes in a four-seat GOP sweep, WHSV reported. The three incoming council members replaced Democratic incumbents Erik Curren, Ophie Kier, and James Harrington all almost doubled their vote totals from 2016, yet still lost.

Local outlet Augusta Free Press reporter Chris Graham called the results “stunning almost beyond words.”

“Democrats got their voters out better than they have in a May cycle in years,” Graham wrote. “Republicans got turnout more akin to, not quite a presidential year, but approaching gubernatorial.”

Graham cited gun control legislation in the state as well as COVID-19 lockdowns as key turnout drivers for Republicans in the city.

Overall voter turnout was 4,320, the Augusta Free Press reported, with a total of 17,279 votes cast.

“For comparison to previous cycles, the 2018 local election had 7,068 votes cast for three seats, which would work out to 2,356 individual voters turning out,” wrote Graham. “Back in 2016, the most recent, until Tuesday, four-seat election, the total cast was 6,325, or 1,581 individual voters.”

Incumbent city council member Andrea Oakes reportedly received around the number compiled in the city by Ed Gillespie in 2017 and Ken Cuccinelli in 2013, striking for a local election and indicative of a huge turnout from GOP voters.

Nearby Wayesboro also put two conservatives, Lana Williams and Bruce Allen, on their city council to “give conservatives a working majority,” Graham reported.

“Bottom line is that the strategies worked, flipping both from D to R, but the change in Staunton is stunning almost beyond words,” Graham opined. “A city that voted for Barack Obama, twice, voted for Hillary Clinton, voted for Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam, even gave a solid majority to Jennifer Lewis in her 2018 congressional run against Ben Cline, is now controlled by Republicans.”

I spent a lot of time in VA when I was active duty Navy. For the most part it is a pretty conservative state. However the Northern part up against DC and the Richmond area pretty much control the entire state and because of the population in those two areas it overrules the rest of the state. Same thing happened in my native CO. The Denver Metro and Front Range area where all the displaced idiots from CA landed has such a large population that it overrules the rest of the state. Get away from the Front Range in CO and it is very conservative but that can't beat the Denver/Boulder crowd in an election.

Well maybe Republicans are getting tired enough of this leftist crap, and are getting their asses off the couch
instead of this "well what can we do, the DemocRATS always win" attitude....

I've maintained the democRATS strongest suit has always been the negative lazy attitude of too many conservatives...

The democrats are concentrating on keeping the house and wining the senate. With both senate and house they will not care who is president. Besides they can impeach with control in both houses. Do not let the democrats sucker you. The democrat anti-American/socialist/communist policies, rules, regulations, and taxes will destroy America forever if we do not vote the democrats out of power in the 2020 election. They should be removed from office and off all the ballots for they offer nothing for America or the people to help make the country better.

Add Maryland and Pennsylvania to that list.

And three republicans (one for state senate) just got elected in California....I see a trend here.

I saw where a Republican woman won the primary in Oregon as well. Could the tide be finally turning?

MAC, I have a long time friend I worked with back in the day who is still directing satellites and lives in that area of VA, just outside DC. It is truly a beautiful spot on earth. But, as you mentioned and he will attest, the demographic degradation is near complete.

I have had numerous discussions about this with other locals. The Staunton News-Leader (Mis-Leader, as we call it) is simply the propaganda arm of the local Democrat party. We have all dropped our subscriptions. 20 local SJWs stand in front of the courthouse with signs calling Trump a xenophobe and it's front page news, 200 people show up for a turkey, ham and oyster dinner at a local church, but that's not newsworthy.

Mr. Graham, by the way, quoted from the Augusta Free Press, is a confirmed liberal himself, so that's not an option.
