Going through pictures. This deer was taken in the northwestern part of our state of Nebraska, near Chadron. November of 1959. I was but one year old at the time. My dad and uncle and a family friend were along as well. I'm thinking the rifle is a sporterized Mauser, probably 8x57. Never found the history on it and he is no longer with us. I will be searching for a rifle similar to this, so I can hunt as he did at least one time. Brings back memories of outdoor times with Dad. At least now I get to share the good times with my two sons, my older brother and a nephew and niece, and someday I hope to with my granddaughter. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Thanks for sharing. I was but 12 years old in '59 and our first deer season was still 2 years away.

Thanks for sharing the memories. In the 1950's, my dad hunted in Harvey Station, NB, Canada almost every year. Had the same outfitter and guide each time, and they all remained friends for life (all have since passed). Above me now on my living room wall is a big 11-pointer Dad shot in '57, shortly after I was born. Mom never forgave him for leaving her home with a newborn. LOL! Did all of his hunting with an open sighted model 94 in .32 special. Later in life, he traded it for a M700 ADL in .308, but never had the opportunity to hunt with it. Memories are our most precious possession.

Thanks for the photographs diamondjim. Mine introduced me to hunting and an uncle did lots to try to refine my taste in shooting. Dad's been gone since '74 and my uncle since 2017. Miss them all. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

Good stuff. My Dad didn't hunt but my Uncle Hank did. We lost him earlier this year and like you, I hope to hunt with his old Winchester 94 that was originally owned by my Grandfather. Thanks for sharing. (Now I need to take something for my allergies that have suddenly flared up.)

I love the old pictures and stories. I hunt deer in Wisconsin with my mother and step father. My oldest daughter and son now get to come along. My step father shot the biggest buck of his life with my then 5 year old daughter with. She is now 10 and I still don’t think she knows what that buck means to him. He really don’t care any more if he hunts. If she gets cold they go back to the garage and play games and draw pictures. I try to to take pictures every year for memories. Thanks for sharing

Give Doc the shotgun. They'll be less apt to get nervy if docs on the street howitzer ...

I loved that. You know it makes no difference if it's Texas hill country or Michigan Upper Peninsula, it's deer camp. It's the best place to be this side of heaven.

Our camp has a few old pictures of Dad and the other members of the Olde Guarde, as we like to call the founding members of our group. 70 years of history. Three generations of our family have hunted out of this camp. We have kept a camp's log going back to the very day the land was bought. I love to sit and read the entries. From the bears that were shot, to the albino buck, the trout fishing runs, and all the deer and turkey this camp produce over more than half a century. Great memories.
