Ruger 3 pos safety is nice but stiff and loud for a young hunter. JMHO Is that like the dreaded mossberg pump shotgun forearm rattle??? Heard that might scare away game also. I dunno if that scares game but its downright fuggin annoying.

Keep in mind the OP is a Sako nut.
Also keep in mind he’s going to put a match grade barrel on said rifle. The chambering will bot 308 Win - but I’m open to changing that.
At the end of the day I’m with Flave - the Ruger 77 just has more of a heirloom rifle feel to it.
I’ve been doing work on a couple off 77’s, and ever time I hold them they just feel right... meaning they feel like a rifle should feel.
I am planning to accurize what ever I get them... but I’m leaning more and more to the 77...

I have several 700’s and I have several 77’s and Hawkeyes. To me, the Rugers fit and feel better. I’ve not had trouble getting good accuracy from either. I’d go Ruger.
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

Jorge, Doesn't apply to the OP's question, but I am sorely tempted to try that 10 shot, DBM model they're making right now. 7.5lbs? If it's reliable that could be a pretty cool auto. That might work. I was addressing the 700.

Ruger from the two you mentioned, but don't overlook the Kimber in 257 Roberts. OldCuss

Let's see, dozens of custom actions are based on the Ruger design, so they must be the best, er, wait.............
The 700 has been replicated for custom actions frequently because it's easy to machine and easy to modify. It was designed to be easy to produce. I own both, and if the 700 has any functional advantage over the Ruger I've yet to see it. Then again, there's a lot I haven't seen, Of the two choices in question, I'd go Ruger. My boys' first rifles were 77/22's. If I were going for a cf intended to be a "forever" rifle for a youngster, I'd lean toward a No. 1.

The Hawkeye Hunter in .308. Shoot it before going with a custom barrel. Maybe that money can go for quality glass.
OTOH, others I would consider are a Kimber Longmaster, a CZ550 if you can find one with a floorplate and not the DM, and the Portugese M70s, which have been described by a few as the best-finished ever made.
Have had three Hawkeyes. Gave the Predator to my son, sold a perfectly fine AW .243 to finance a bad idea, and still have an AW .223 with a pretty walnut stock I picked up in the classifieds here. Don't see that one going anywhere. All good rifles with zero issues.
What fresh Hell is this?

The 700 has been replicated because it is a very accurate centerfire rifle design. Many folks actually prefer pushfeed rifles. There's an abundance of good choices to satisfy different tastes and preferences. Let's see, dozens of custom actions are based on the Ruger design, so they must be the best, er, wait.............

I have a soft spot for Rugers because that was the rifle my dad gave to me the Christmas I was 18. He gave all 3 of we boys Ruger M77 Mk II rifles the Christmas we were 18. My older brother a 308, me a 260, and my younger brother a 243. We have all used them as our primary deer rifles for 15 years or so. The only thing we got done was the trigger pull lightened. My 260 ( bought in 2003) has never given me problems and has taken probably 20+ deer. I say go Ruger!!
......the occasional hunter wielding a hopelessly inaccurate rifle, living by the fantastical rule that this cartridge can deliver the goods, regardless of shot placement or rifle accuracy. The correct term for this is minute of ego.

Has not been my experience. but it has been mine..... Go to gunbroker and pick up a nice Remington 700 with a wood stock.....you'll be happy you did.
