If the finish and dimensions of the handgun are decent and the lube works, you shouldn't require one, even with full power loads.

Keith ran all of his magnum loads with BHN of 10.

Gas check loads can shoot a bit better at high temps with a hot gun though and it makes it rare to get any leading.

You don’t need a gas check with the MBC 215. They are nominal 18 on the low to 20 BHN on the high. That bullet I have personally driven to just shy of 1400 with no leading or gas check in a 73 vintage 41 mag Blackhawk.
