I had a friend that was the Air Force representative for the White House honor guard during the LBJ administration. It was a symbolic thing. Each branch of the military would select a representative to form an honor guard to be present at all official White House functions.

He had some interesting tales to tell about LBJ.

For one thing, he said the man drank very heavy,...said he would get blasted out of his gourd even during official White House functions where he would be meeting with heads of state.
