Yes, he did!

But this isn't one. He was born in 1949, and this has several signs of having been made in the 1950s, maybe early 60s--including a Jaeger trigger. I also have yet to Google up a Stiles rifle of any recoil that doesn't have a recoil pad.

Butch:

He sure did. My 1922 would go head to head with any Griffin & Howe 1922 conversion and not give up a thing. Except, of course, that I paid about 25% of what a comparable G&H is bringing these days. The shop where I bought it had gotten it from the original owner's estate and had no information on it. They'd not taken the rifle down to find the GLS marking. And then finding out who GLS was took a fair amount of effort. The ACCG doesn't keep a record of members' maker's marks, so they couldn't help. I got lucky finding someone on a discussion board who recognized the mark and was kind enough to respond.

That really was a nice pick up.

Well done.

That is a beautiful rifle for sure, no matter who made it. The fore end tip is unique, maybe that will help your search some. Did you get that at Capital Sports, if so, that place must be a treasure trove.

Thanks--and yes I did buy it Capital Sports. Usually stop in once a week to see what's turned up.

Have been looking and looking through my library of gun books, and haven't found a similar forend tip yet!

That forearm tip treatment is reminiscent of the 100+ year old Stutzen [sp] stocks (not "Schuetzen") that were a fad in Eastern Europe. Sort of a schnabel folded back on itself. At any rate it's different in a neat sort of way. Those Germanic stocks were fullsome in size and most often employed side panels in the receiver area too.

I wouldn't have let that rifle set on the rack either. I wish to heck I had a LGS like that here! On the other hand maybe it's good I don't...

Nor I, or any other red blooded Loony..

If that gun don't lite yo fire, yo wood's wet... blush

Or said another way, you really not a Loony if you left that one sitting in the rack.

Good find. And, you're right, those don't show up that often, at least around my area.

+1 on really good LGS's...

Interesting rear scope base that does not require removal of the stripper clip boss.

I modified that base quite a while back with a Dremel tool.

Good idea to keep it original.

Be careful John, those things easily become addictive to men of our age and propensity

Phil,

I'm way over the edge already--and probably on synthetic-stocked rifles as well. Then there are the old military rifles, going back to 1866. Oh. and I'm headed back to Capital Sports today, to take a second look at a nice little British side-by-side 2-1/2" 12-gauge....

I am a youngster compared to most of you but that G33/40 Custom seems to me to have many of the traits of Bob Johnson of Spokane Washington. He was a gunsmith who made guns that had a bit of a older style than Al Biesen who worked in Spokane at the same time.

John Please let me know what the SXS 2 inch gun is. Nothing like a British SXS. I love my British light game gun with 2 inch RST 3/4 or 15/16ths of 8 shot and a grouse or woodcock is in serious trouble of landing.in the crock pot.
Thanks

I think that it has the Pennsylvania German look and it reminds me of some that I have seen from the shop of Flaigs. They did utilitarian stuff but made very nice customs as well.
