Well crap,one followed me home today.
B model, 280 rem. Deer rig.
Thinking 3-9x since such a tank.
Wonder how tube lengths might have differed on Vari X vs VX.

My neck not as stretchy these days so proly go offset ring at rear. This one has the orig vert split rings Lyman 6x. Might keep that scope just for blasting deer local, kinda cool period piece.

But if i lug this tank out west, its getting different glass.

I have had a few No.1s. The best scope that I have found for the No.1 is the discontinued Zeiss 3-9x40 MC. Fits perfect in Ruger low rings. I also have a Leupold VX 3i 3.5-10x40 that looks like it will fit nicely on a No.1 in low or medium mounts.

No.1 with a Zeiss 3-9x40 MC matched up against the VX 3i 3.5-10x40.

My dads 1B in 300 WM wears vx2 3-12 and it’s just right

All of my No. 1's have Alexander Henry forearms and open sights and I use 1-4x24 low power variables with a rear offset ring on all of them. I do have a custom No. 3 22 in K-hornet with no open sights and a 4.5-14x40.

On my old B back in around '80 I had the Varix ii 3-9x w AO.
Varminting, usually shot off bipods. Worked fine.

On my RSI I ran an old M8 4x and used an offset ring at the back...just needed that little bit slid back.

I tried a 2-7x VX1 and 2.5-8x VX3 and would have needed two offset rings to make em work.

Just mounted a Meopta Meopro 4.5-14x on a 257 Weatherby, even with the 44 mm objective they fit fine in low mounts and plenty of lee way with the long tube. The rings look too close together but not sure I want to go with a pickatinny rail or other options that give more adjustment range. On the low end the straight 20-30mm tubes look good to my eye especially on the 1-A or RSI.

The Meopta Meopro models that mimic the Zeiss Conquest that Meopta manufactured are by far the best solution for any Ruger No.1 scope question. I have several No.1 rifles and the are all now rocking original Zeiss Conquest or Meopta Meopros. No more goofy extension rings or neck stretching for me. I too have a .280 Rem No.1B and it is indeed a tank, a very accurate tank. So much so that I scoped it with a 3-12x56mm Conquest(That Meopta still makes their own version of, plus versions with illuminated reticle) and use just for deer blind duty. It’s been a very accurate and Lucky combo for me with both 140 gr Interlocks and 175 gr Sierras. I have cracked some really fine bucks with both.
