Got an old rifle and this was on it.
Says "Permacenter".
Will snap pics later.

Dunno what time span these made.
Has reg crosshair.

Have not shot it, just popped out of the like new rifle's rings and its in VVG shape.
Am not going to use vintage optic on my deer rifle, even for backyard micro bucks.

Wondered if this scope was THE item to have back then LOL

6X Lyman is a great scope. Better than Weaver, has the Permacenter reticle. Still does OK compared to today's glass.

Where I was raised in New England, Lymans target scopes were well regarded and their hunting scopes were considered to be on par with Leupolds. Better than the Japanese scopes of the day, better than Weavers or Redfields, equal to Leupolds, but not quite as good a Unertls. Unertl hunting scopes in 2.5x and 4x were about twice as expensive as contemporary Weaver K-series scopes, so only the more knowledgeable and/or well to do shooters typically bought Unertl Falcons and Hawks. You might be surprise do crisp the optics can be in a 60 year old Unertl.

Coworker had a Unertl 12x on a pre 64 varmint .243 w Canjar trigger.

Buddy had a couple, this late 80s, when Feckers were reasonable.

Saw a Lyman target in orig wood box a few yrs ago.
Had some rust on it though.

Still cool.

Remember going to Bill Goodman shows and seeing cool stuff behind the chicken wire at Ballentines table.

The Permacenter was made from 1962-1980. The Leupolds were killing them in the later years. They're good scopes.

It just got me curious. The rifle was made in 67 but dunno when it was sold. Wondered if the owner got it and scope at same time or not ( not that it makes any diff, but just trying to imagine somebody dreaming of a hunt and getting things packaged ).

Ya just wonder about old guns and how they came to be set up a certain way.

Maybe I bought it to do what the original owner did, or had planned to but didn't.

The only issue with the Lymans, in my opinion, was that the tube was a little fragile at the threaded joint between the objective bell and the tube. Still, they were a great scope. Good optics, super adjustments.
I'll tell you what, I would be happy to put that scope on my sheep rifle and pack it up the mountain. It would have worked fine fifty years ago and it would work fine now. I regularly hunt with fifty year old scopes and older rifles. I don't think you would want to mount it on your rifle and throw it across the yard, like Dip Stick does, but I don't think most people would do that with most scopes and rifles. GD

have had a number of lyman scopes, not sure how they compare with todays scopes for clarity but can tell you they adjust great and hold their settings.

I still have at least three of the silhouette models, very good scopes, but maybe a bit large, two 6Xs and a 10X. Adjustments are very repeatable and they all have parallax adjustment.

*I remember in the day it seemed like Leupold was aggressively marketing scopes. Lyman had really nice solid scopes. The 20x Lyman scopes were modified for BR shooting. My 20x was stolen years ago. Recently, I let a friend have my 3x Lyman scope for his collection. Lyman was too "laid back" marketing their products.

I just finished mounting my Leupold 8x from 1976 on a modified 03A3 for shooting lead bullets. That scope is as good as the day it was made.

The only way I get Lymans is on 70 year old M70 Winchesters.

As mentioned above, they are very nice scopes. I’ve owned several Permacenter Lymans & the 6x was my favorite. It is a long scope for a 6x though.

I have a 6X Permacenter on a late Remington 722 .222 with 24 inch barrel. Everybody thinks it is an 8X when they first see it.

I used a 10x Lyman non-permacenter on first MS rifle and liked it a lot. Moved it to my Ruger Number 1 for dropping LR deer, worked just fine. I believe the whole rig went to an elk hunter in WI when my BinL sold it for me.
