I would like to replace the Hogue grips that came standard on the round butt 629-4 I have with something that has less pronounced or no finger grooves, less sticky/tachy would also be a plus. I recall liking Pachmayer grips but there seem to be numerous options. I have medium to large hands.

Appreciate any suggestions and pictures would be a bonus.

Thanks

Pachmayr are good ones, but get very hard after some years. Not really any better than Hogue's IMHO.

I had a set of Compac’s on my 629 MG forever but went back to the original Hogue’s. I’ll see if I can find a pic.

S&W factory Hogue’s, still king

When I shot the first Mountain Gun, it had Compacs on it and I loved the way it pointed. But hotter loads beat up my knuckle under the trigger guard. I went back to the Hogue’s and they feel much better. The last time I saw the first MG I shot, he had switched to Hogue’s as well.

I'm also a Pachmayr dude. Perfect on an N-frame. Not the best looking, but, hey, they work (for me).

Worked well on my duty .38, too.

Compacs are my preferred grip on a round-butt.

I appreciate the replies and pictures. I am leaning toward the Pachmayr compacs. Has anyone bought them recently? I have read that the new ones are not as well made as the older ones, perhaps not even the same material?

TWR - did you simply sand off the finger grooves on those Hogues?

Any other suggestions for replacement grip brands or styles are welcome.

Thanks.

You can buy an older set on ebay. Tons of Pachmayrs on there. I always buy older ones without the stupid medallion and have several extra sets.

I have a set of compacts I'm not using, but am prepping for a trip that's starting Fri. & don't have time to wheel/deal or ship this week.

If you haven't found any in 10 days, PM me.

Love those three inch Model 10s, with the bull barrels and round butt grip frames. Best carry revolvers S&W ever made. Those and the Model 13s in the same configuration. Same for the stainless versions.

I like Pachmayr Presentation grips on N frames.

Don't know if they are available for round butts.

They fit my hand, have no finger grooves, and still work well after 30 years of aging.

Im not a Pachmayr fan, but I can tolerate the compacts, nice round, comfortable feel, the other style is to much a of a plow handle style, and just doesn't fit my hand well. Alternative might be the jerry Miculek smooth wood grips for the round butt N frame, good fit, feel and smooth so they are not tacky in the hand?

I have a S&W 4" 629-3 . I have a set black Pachmayr Presention grips on it, and like it a lot.

To me, the key is finding the correct Presentation grip. They make two versions of the Presentation grips for N-frame Smiths: LARGE and SMALL. The LARGE is very bulky, and too thick for my tastes. The SMALL is perfect for me as it is thinner, and much more trim. To me, the SMALL Presentation grip makes the N-frame fell smaller, like a L-frame. The size LARGE or SMALL size notation is molded into the grip on the inside top area.

Look for a SMALL Pachmayr Presentation grip. A fantastic grip.

No Hogue sells them like that.

The Pachmayers I have are for Colt MKIII frames. With those guns I shoot double action better with the factory grips, and single action better with the Pachmayers.

I like Hogues but always thought the Pach's were just classier looking. I am running Pachmayr on a 629 N frame and Hogues on a 686. Both function about the same but just like the look of the Pachmayr.
