Six digit gun in about 95% condition came with vx3 4.5-14x40 in low leupold rings and one piece base. Any recommendations on what might be the best factory Ammo for it. I do not reload Gun is 26" barrel Previous owner had passed and his son never even found any ammo for it. Said he was sure his dad never shot more than a box or two through it

Start with something cheap and go up from there.

With that caliber, it is going to do just fine as long as you place the bullet correctly.

The 270 Weatherby is a SAAMI round therefore all factory chambers should be fine with any factory ammunition.

The .270 Weatherby is a hoss of a cartridge. If they would only screw a barrel with a 1:8 twist on it. Then you could shoot 170 Matrix out of it at about 3000 FPS, But as is, it will hurl 150s at about 3100 or so. I want one myself but am torn between the Weatherby and a WSM. Unlike some, I'm partial to .277 diameter. They, along with the 6.5-06 and .25-06 are the hammer on deer size animals.

I thought I read somewhere that the newer Weatherby rifles had more normal freebore.

Filaman, could be I don't know the winchester in question a push feed made in the 90's or something newer? Weatherby ammo is still loaded to very high pressure in my book, SAAMI or not. My jap Mk V in 270 Wthby handles full throttle loads with 150 gr bullets at 3150fps. I'd sure like to hear what can be done with the above men tioned m70. My gun only has a24" barrel if I ever wear it out it will be rebarreled with a 26".

If it is a six digit it will be a crf made in the late 90s; I think they introduced the 270 wby chambering around ‘97 and it was short lived.

The 270 WB has .378" freebore, this is what all the original 257-7mm WB had. 224,240 & 6.5-300 have more typical throats.

Jump on that stainless one if the price is not too crazy.

He told me $600 on the stainless one. Unless something is terribly wrong it's coming home this evening. Bare gun with a leupold bar and split rings on it

Picked up the stainless 270 weatherby model 70 this evening only thing I wasn't crazy about barrel has been cut and crowned (looks like an excellent job) good news barrel I see still 25.5 inches long. Other than that I would say around 90% condition. Probably going to put a vx3 3.5-10x 50 on this one

I've got 4 of those scopes. They can say what they want about Leupold but I love that scope. The optics are great and it's nice and light. I've got one of them on my Mark V 300 Wby Mag.

Go to Midway usa and look for the 130 Grain Norma Spitzer ammo. I have 4 270 Weatherby's now. All 4 shoot this ammo well under and inch.

with handloading, I can get close, but my Vanguard VGX will put 5 factory rounds under a dime, if I am having a good day.

Not a lot of choices for factory ammo in 270Wthby. Weatherby (made by Norma) and Norma are the two best choices. The Weatherby branded ammo has a variety of bullets from the cheap ($40/box) 130gr. Spritzer and bullets by Hornady, Nosler and Barnes but they are in the $60-$80/ box range. I bought some of the cheap 130gr stuff for the brass as it is the same price as empty brass. I shot some of it for break in and killed an antelope with it but most of it I pulled to use the brass for my own reloads. I kept the powder and primers to use in junker/fouler loads and sold the bullets to a buddy for his 270Win. I now use a handload with a 129gr. Barnes LRX and it is a laser at 3450fps with RL-22. I have a 26” Mark V Weathermark!

Love my 270 Weatherby! As others have said it is a hammer on game but doesn’t get the love other Weatherby rounds do!

Good luck with your ammo search!

Not what you asked & you may not have time or space but if you plan to shoot calibers like the cool 270 Weatherby reloading makes a lot of sense financially & most times performance wise as well. I have a 22-250 that shoots factory equal to hand loads. That is the lone rifle of 7 different chamberings I’ve loaded for regularly. The busy guys I know & are in our hunting social circle we’re all surprised when they made the leap they could make the time & enjoyed it. I have space but very little time so load by priorities.

I would give the Hornaday ammo a try as the price is not inflated on these. The Norma/Weatherby loads do live up to expectations for velocity and usually accuracy too.
