Got a nephew started deer hunting last fall. He received a Savage 6.5CM for Christmas. Rifle likes the Hornady Whitetail 129gr Interlock load (#81489). Even though they are only $23 a box locally, money is still a concern. I would like to get him started reloading (1) to reduce cost / increase trigger time, and (2) as a learning experience for him.
Anyone have a 6.5CM, 129gr load recipe that closely approximates the Hornady 129gr interlock at 2820 fps? Hornady website only shows StaBALL making 2800fps. Barnes only shows SuperFormance making 2800fps. OTOH, Nosler site shows ALL powders making 2800fps with a 129gr bullet.
Have a variety of powders and primers on hand. Prefer Varget and RL15. Goal is a low cost, accurate, "one load does all." Approximately 200-300 rounds per year paper punching, ringing steel, and maybe 1 or 2 KY WT's per year. Will reuse 1x Hornady factory brass from his rifle. The Hornady 129gr Interlocks from Midway look reasonable at $0.25 each. Just looking for a powder / charge / COAL recommendation.
Thank you !

I shoot mostly the heavier bullets in my Creeds, but with around 43 grains, both Reloder 16 and 17 were around 2800, with the 129 Interlock. Good accuracy with both.
You did not "seen" anything, you "saw" it. A "creek" has water in it, a "crick" is what you get in your neck. Liberals with guns are nothing but hypocrites.

More than a few levels of 6.5 Creed use. When I bought my Savage m12fv with the heavy 26 barrel it was for shooting long with high bc 140+ gr bullets. The used Tikka on the other hand is a whole lot more weight friendly for normal hunting. That American Whitetail load shoots MOA in both guns. If. You don't have all the brass you need you could sure do worse than to buy a case of it because time you buy 2 boxes of 129 gr SP bullet ,200 primers, 2 lbs powder and 200 rds of brass ,you got way lot more $$ in a potential ammo supply than 10 boxes of the American Whitetail loads ready to go. No disrespect intended but your first duty to the nephew is to teach him how to operate and be successful as inexpensively as possible. A long the way you can teach him how to reload. I been shooting the 129 gr SP #2620 for years in the 6.5x55 and the 264 win mag ,it's damn good practical bullet that allways gets the job done. Meet his needs as inexpensive as possible and teach a long the way. I never pulled one down but it wouldn't surprise me one bit to find that ammo loaded with Superformance powder. MB

In my 6.5 CM, I shoot two bullets; the 120 gr. Nosler BT and the one you mention, the 129 gr. Hornady SP Interlock. I load the Hornady bullet over 38.5 grains of Varget. Brass is Hornady primed with a Federal 210M. I get great accuracy and velocity hovering right around 2800 fps. COAL in my Barrett Fieldcraft is 2.75” but you’ll have to determine what his Savage will allow and likes. Hope that helps.
If we live long enough, we all have regrets. But the ones that nag at us the most are the ones in which we know we had a choice.

Its.not hard to achieve good accuracy with several powders H4350. RL-16, 17 OR RL26 with that bullet. H4350 and RL26 are my favorites.

I’m shooting the 130 game changers with good luck. I think they are very good and affordable for box 100. I’m using big game at max at around or almost 2900
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Gents, I appreciate all of the input....
@lastround - the Varget load matches the Nosler data. Will probably start there.
@Magnum_Bob - Yes, sometimes less cost (and easier) to just buy a case and be done. However, I have everything already on hand to get him started, except possibly, the bullets. So, no out-of-pocket costs... I have done what you stated with Nosler trophy grade and Federal blue box for the .270 Win, even though I have a lifetime supply of reloading components.
The nephew is a smart lad. Picks up quick. I try to introduce something new each time his Grandpa (my BIL) brings him down to shoot. Yesterday was intro to (awareness of) shooting in the wind (gusts at 10-15mph from 3 o'clock). Figure we will start on reloading in the next month or so. Goal would be to have him shoot his next deer this fall with a round that he rolled himself.
@Antelope - Appreciate the post. Surprised at the differences in max loads and velocities between QL (?) and Hodgdon website. eg: Varget and H4895. Not sure where the difference would come from other than Interlock vs Accubond bullet construction ?
@lhead - Appreciate the RL26 load. Have several pounds of RL26 on hand. Will queue that up to compare with Varget.
Thank you !

Hes a newb to handloading. Thats the obvious problem. Questions like, what COAL, etc are a dead give away. He needs to buy a load manual and figure out some of this chitd on his own.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

COAL?
It was stated the rifle liked the factory ammo. Easy starting point: same length for the same bullet.

Thank you ! Interlock vs. Accubond matters a lot. Difference in bearing surface. Additionally QL's using default values for things like case capacity. Different brass can with different capacities makes a huge difference.
You didn't use logic or reason to get into this opinion, I cannot use logic or reason to get you out of it.

RL16 will do it easily, 43.5 gr gets me ~2,830 fps with 127gr LRX out of a 20". The Alliant website gives a max load for the 129gr SST of 44.4gr @ ~2,949 fps.
As antelope_sniper said though, lots of powders (especially 4350 burn rate and slower) should give good velocities with that bullet. I like the 129gr IL in my Grendel because it doesn't protrude into the powder column very much so you can load it up with slower or bulkier powders.
I will say that in my 22" Montana, the 129gr whitetail chrono'd at ~2,760 fps, not quite box velocity.

I don't load quite hot enough to get 2800 but 41.7gr of RL16 is very accurate with 129SP seconds that I got from Midway - runs right at 2700fps in Hdy brass w/ CCI 200 primers. I have no doubt that it would be a deer slayer. I have taken several deer with the 6.5CM and 130gr Sierra Gamechangers - but being how those are unobtainable the Hornadys may be the go to this year.

Gents,
I had to do a double take when I saw that I started this thread almost two years ago. I appreciate the input. However, no reloading for nephew's rifle, yet. BIL has managed to keep him in factory ammo (some how?). Nephew has managed to whack two more KY white tails with his 6.5 over the past two seasons. He is now 3 for 3. Once he brings some empty brass this way, we'll work on learning how to reload. Again, Thank you for the input...
