I no longer reload for shotgun shells and have a lot of Hodgdon Clays. Has anyone used Hodgdon Clays with 115 gr. XTP's? I know Hodgdon lists 3.7 gr. minimum to 3.9 gr. maximum for a Gold Dot, but just wondering if anyone has been there done that.

Saw this post right after it came in, and since that time I've been looking. I came into a pound of Clays as gift from a friend. I've gone through all my old reloading books, near 50, and finally found a Hodgdon manual from 1997 that has loads listed for Clays for a 9mm.
Book says max load, 3.9gr, Vel. 1095, CUP 32,600.

The one I previously mentioned was found on the Hodgdon website.
Clays Starting Load 3.7 grs.
Velocity 1,066 fps
Pressure 30,900 CUP
Clays Max Load 3.9 grs.
Velocity 1,095 fps
Pressure 32,600 CUP
I was really looking to see if anyone was using Clays in 9 MM with 115 grain projectiles for their experience. I realize it's not the best powder offering for the caliber/bullet listed. Just trying to utilize what I had available because the current availability for some powders are non-existent. Also wanting to use a surplus powder that I had readily available.

Clays is a clean burning powder, popular with cowboy action shooters. I used it in my .38 Spec.
Never tried it in a 9, but it should do very well with moderate loads.
There are better powders for "balls to the wall" loads.

Think I'll just go for it. I've got enough powder for over 22,000 rounds. That ought to last awhile. LOL

Think I'll just go for it. I've got enough powder for over 22,000 rounds. That ought to last awhile. LOL  It'll take a bunch of primers to light up that much powder... Just thinking about loading so many rounds makes me tired... And, I have a Dillon 550-B, which turns'em out pretty quick.... DF

Well, I can assure you I'm going to burn up my measly pound of Clays. Going to load 3.7gr behind the 115's. Adjust from there, if needed.

I use Clays for almost every target load, especially 45, and 9mm.
Its extremely accurate
3.8 sounds about right.
