just wondering if there was any consensus on a beater scope for a truck gun, in at least 6X (fixed 6 okay, or 2-7 or 3-9 would be fine)...

for under 100 bucks. smile

tall order, I know. iron sights better, I hear ya. but for those of you who have found some bargain priced scopes which perform, please name them if you would; I'd be much obliged. laugh

Cabela's has a Simmons Whitetail Classic for about $100. I have shot one on my 300 WM for some time and no problems. Nice looking "granite" finish.

I agree on a new K6. for $129.99. For under $100, I'd be tempted to try the new Simmons Prohunter line......

I have had a new Weaver 6X on a fairly light .308 Norma for a couple years, then moved it onto a coyote rifle, and then again to another .308 Norma. I find it brighter than the older El Paso Weavers, but the objective is also larger. It has given no problems thus far.
I also still have 5 El Paso Weavers, in 2.5X and 3X that have proven to be tougher than my head.
The El Paso K4's have as great a reputation as tough scopes in these parts, as they apparently do in Montana.
I've never played with an El Paso K6 yet, but would buy one in a heartbeat.
Good luck in your search.
Dwayne

For under a $100.00 bucks my brother bought and likes a Bushnell Trophy 3x9x40.
They can be had now at Natchez for around $75.00.
And for less than 10.00 more you can buy the better Bushnell Legend in the same power at the same place i just mentioned.

Savvy 'net shopping will get you a new Weaver K4 for $109 delivered. IMO, @ that price point, it's a solid scope.

Thanks, all... I have owned the El Paso K series Weavers and agree they are tough as tanks. I have a 1940's era K6 on a 1937 Mannlicher Schoenauer in a Griffin & Howe side mount. Period scope for the rifle, and it has kept its zero for years now.

Thanks for the tip on the K6 from Natchez. That just may be the way I go. smile

Of course please continue with the suggestions. laugh

Don't over look the Pentax's copyright our Doug at Cameraland.

The christmas tree reticle ought to be tolerable on a truck gun and they do suck up the ambiance of your headlights iffin used under shaded circumstances .........

I've got a whole assortment of older Weaver K-4's, Stith Bearcubs in 2.5 and 4X and, Redfields in 2.5, 4 and 2x7X. They are all as good as the day I opened the box. Sure, optics have changed in the last 30 years, but the mechnaicals of these scopes are solid. Look for a used scope at a gun show.

+1.

The old Weavers may be good scopes, but you have to find one used, and the optical quality may not be what it once was.

I have a newer V9 on one of my AR's, and it has held up to repeated eratic recoil of the AR.

The good news about the original, steel Weavers is they can still be repaired by the same guys and in the same shop that they came from. Just had a V9 rebuilt.

Also the Bushnell Trophy is a good scope in the context of this thread.

I don't think it really helps much when people tell someone on a tight budget to try and track down a 30 year old used scope.

I have an older Bushnell Banner on my 22. It was made in Japan and is a much nicer scope than the new versions. They are hard to come by.

Natchez Shooter Supply is closing out their camo finished 2-7x33 Nikon ProStaffs for under $90, which is less than wholesale. The current production Nikon ProStaff optics look better to me than the old ElPaso Weavers.
