Because FORD is going to build you that small pickup so many have said you wanted on this forum over the years. Details are sparse at this point, except that the truck will likely be called the Maverick. Click Here for More Info

I hope they do - just two doors and a bench seat. I can see why folks like a bit more room in the cab but in a small utility pickup I want that room in the bed.

Those cars were a real POS.

Maybe Toyota or Nissan will bring one back. Toyota has the Tacoma now. It’s certainly not full size. Son is on his second one and really likes it.

Tacos have gotten bigger and bigger as have Frontiers, both are more like mid-size as compared to 20 years back.

There must be a lot of people who don't want a four-door "pickup" with only a half-ass bed. What would be really appealing would be an extended cab pickup with a full eight-foot bed. That would give some secure inside storage with ability to haul actual cargo like plywood and lumber. Or a kayak.

Dan and Rocky, you guys realize that Ford has never stopped making extended cab long bed trucks right? They aren’t compacts but I don’t think we ever have or ever will see a small truck with an 8’ box.

I don't know Rocky, my across the street neighbor had second thoughts the second time he knocked down my bricked mail box with his four door , eight foot bed pickup. It barely fit in his driveway and not in his garage.

I currently have both a 98 Ranger and a 2015 Tacoma. I don't have boats or trailers. I do haul stuff occasionally, but don't farm or ranch. I don't haul a crew or a bunch of kids. Just my wife and I. Meeting for dinner...see you at the restaurant.
The Ranger is a stepside 2 wheel drive, 4 cylinder with manual transmission. I added a positraction rear end changing it from a one wheel drive to a two wheel drive. It has a simple standard cab. It also has old school crank windows. The Tacoma is a 4x4 with 6 cylinder and manual transmission. It has the extended cab.
Comparing the two, the Ranger is hands down the winner in driver visibility and being far more nimble for parking and tight spaces. With the manual transmission it has enough power for my needs. The downside is it doesn't have the room behind the seat for much if anything. Extended cab would be perfect. Bed length is same as Tacoma, but Tacoma has better width and depth.
The Tacoma wins in power and off road capability. 4x4 compared to 2x4 is a no brainer. The Tacoma is huge compared to the Ranger. The bed of the Tacoma has a better coating instead of the painted metal of the Ranger.
My perfect truck for my needs would be a Ranger sized vehicle with an extended cab. V6 with a rock solid transmission and a positraction rear end. 6 to 7 foot bed works for me. Great visibility for the driver. AC is needed, but not all the electronic do-dads that drive up the price. Add some adjustable tie down points in the bed and I'm good to go.
I've seen many posts about someone having the need of a powerful truck for work, but need something practical for town. Whoever solves this puzzle wins.
