Anyone out there that knows of a gunsmith in Southern California that can change the barrel on a Savage AXIS? (has the equipment - knows what he is doing). I have a Savage AXIS with a POS 243 Win barrel on it. I was thinking of going to 6mm Creedmor or Dasher. Why i need someone in my state is the fact that if you send a gun out of the Marxist/Socialist Peoples Republic of California to a gunsmith it has to be sent back to a FFl holder and then you have to reregister it . Its an extra cost of about $100. Found a gunsmith ??? here that said he coulded headspace a rifle for $85 if I furnish the gages and he keeps the gages and it cold take 4 months.

There must be a gunsmith local to you that could do this simple job...it's not difficult and if you know what you are doing no gauges are needed.
I've switched Savage barrels in the field on the tailgate of a pickup and gone back to sending rounds downrange in 30 minutes.
If you have to pay someone to do custom work on an Axis, and pay shipping on top of that it will end up being less expensive overall just to buy a new rifle in the caliber you want.
Also you might consider calling CA DOJ to find out what the actual regulations are regarding shipping and receiving a firearm back from a gunsmith to clear up any misconceptions.

It is very easy to rebarrel a Savage. You need a barrel vise, barrel nut wrench and headspace gauges. There are many YouTube videos for instruction. You could buy these items for not much more than your Smith is wanting to charge, and once you have them you will always be able to switch back or buy new barrels and install them yourself.

Not sure where you got your information but I’m pretty sure you can mail a gun to a gunsmith and he can do the work and then mail it back to your residence in CA since you are already the legal registered owner of the firearm. At least this was true the last time I sent one out. As others have stated switching a barrel on a Savage is pretty easy with just a few tools needed.

It's a common adage that doing custom work on a rifle spends money to decrease it's resale value.
You are starting with a $300 gun. A barrel is going to be $300+. Unless you go higher. You are $700+ into a Savage Axis! Do you really, really like it?

I'm guessing you could sell the Axis, and use that money to but brass and dies...Then buy this American for less than the barrel job.
Look at the numbers, and decide for yourself.
The link didn't work. An American at Buds for $450.

Fat Albert. Get the barrel from Douglas or pastor or someone else. Have it chambered and threaded for your savage. Get the headspace gauges watch YouTube and do it yourself. It's a half hour job. Bob Nelson

EABCO has just about anything for a Savage. https://www.eabco.net/
